    Chokka prices....!!

Boat prices were in the region of R250 a kg when I last heard...ie. what the boats are getting paid by the middlemen/exporters. Local bait market must compete with that to get stock.

    Chokka prices....!!

Prices are set by the boat price for export market...As you go further and further away from the source it goes up. Generally by time it gets to cape town the price is double boat prices, so a 500g bull, R275 would be about right if not a little steep. There is cheaper chokka around at the local...

    Edible fishing rod?

I fish my edibles on a 4-5oz rod and have never been undergunned. Though a 20kg cracker would probably test me, its caught steenies and crackers up to 15 kg in amoung the bricks enough times..I fish live bait on that rod for cob etc...13ft 4-5z does it for me.

    Oyster Bay Fishing

Your bait will also be found in the river mouths, bloodworms, sand prawns, red bait that is washed up, sand crabs, live mullets caught with throw net, beaten local chokka strips with sandprawn etc. One really just needs to purchase chokka and you collect the rest of the bait yourself, its half...

    Lure fishing around Fish Hoek

You have to wait for the yellowtail and katonkel to return bud...Summer conditions, lots of south east winds push them into the bay and into casting range..Plugs, Wayne Stanley plugs, white 2oz for cape fish, 4/0 to 5/0 mustad trebles, pink and green plugs too. Get some tin spoons, secret 70...

    Galjoen 2024

Hope it went back...Most cape guys have never seen a fish that size, though those that fish in less fished waters up the coast generally have caught a few of them each..My biggest this season was just over 50cm. Went back to make more babies, those fish are over 15-20 years old generally once...

Galjoen Spots Strand to Bettys Bay

Tagged galjoen also show that 90% of them are resident, never moving more than 300m off their piece of reef and structure...by the previous post I meant that winds determine inshore water temperatures and hence fishing at any given spot, and since galjoen are mostly resident, the wind should not...

Galjoen Spots Strand to Bettys Bay

Gallies still eat in colder water...and are found alll the way up to durban..so I don't know the spots there or how they work on what wind..but that should help you..Gallies eat stuff thats hiding from them under rocks, under the sand, inside thick meaty pods (red bait) etc.. so they like the...

Cape St Francis winter fishing advice needed

Wrong time of year for cob, right time for steenies, blue elf, cracker and gallies..Please put back breeding stock, the area is under more and more pressure with the local poor population increasing dramatically since covid, the location doubled in size...

    Otter Trail

No, it is Africa's oldest Marine Reserve....You can see shoals of yellowtail sometimes and other gamefish along the walk, there are designated areas where fishing is allowed but that is only for locals that stay there, with permits, with reduced amount and size limits and slot limits in place...

    Fish/Minnow traps

Depends on the laws of the estuaries...In rivers I don't think its legal..at least not for local species..For invasive species, which will be most of what you'll catch, one could argue that ones removing them but don't quote me, I'm not a lawyer and it's not legal advice...You are not allowed to...

    Marauder style lure

I'm sure it will work... When the tuna are on the surface chowing, you don't need much..and a popper is the gold standard, but they'll eat anything making a flash or a splash and moving fast...I've had fun before on my yellowtail rod, taken the hooks off a white plug with no eyes (which is as...

Yeah aside from some sharks and coldwater rays, when the waters 12 where I most often fish, we go drink beer or get some work done.

    Spots near Table view.

Yeah 12 is chilly...Only a steenie would be swimming around in that, and some reef sharks and a hottentot maybe. Wait for a west to blow in some warmer water and it might surprise you. Though my west coast fishing experience is just a bunch of blanks and some fish in langebaan and berg mouth...
