This is a short video I composed and soon will be doing more were random people cast reels that have been magged.

Allot of guys ask why I dont hold my thumb close to reel when mags are removed it was to show how fast an over run will/can happen and not to say that you will cast an over run everytime you cast not having the system fitted.

I was very sceptic at first when I first installed the MAG IT into one of my reels and now Im sold.

I always had problems with my Tor50 in casting now I enjoy it.

The Penn Fathom is a beast of a reel I filled it up with braid and Im scared to cast it even with the magging fitted, losing a finger is always in the back of my mind and I''m sure ill get more confidence as I get use to the reel. Have a look at the video.

Cheers guys

Nicely done Mark !

Perhaps just a few comments on the performance and speed of the two reels on the clip ....

1. The Torium was set up for very high spoolspeed and this reel had only three magnets on the plate - as you could see, it fed the line smoothly, but was tricky to stop in time when the sinker landed.

Might also be that you were watching the spool more than the sinker Mark ? ;)

This is classic stuff when you first cast a magged reel - I at first struggled to not keep on looking at the spool, but once you see that you have it dialed in correctly and can really trust the reel, you can just watch the sinker and forget about the rest - stopping the spool in time when the sinker lands.

Remember that the standard fitment for the Torium 16/20/30 is, six magnets in three stacks of two on top of one another and you can still slide the magnets outwards to give more control.

As the flanges of the spool is conical, the further you move the magnets to the outside radius, the closer they come to the spool and the more control you get.

2. The Fathom is supplied with six magnets and the reel Mark is casting here, only had three on the magplate - again you have a lot more adjustibility by adding those extra little magnets.

From screaming fast ton slow as a snail - the choice is yours !

Enjoy !

Sorry guys - fast brain and clumsy fingers from my side - Fathom GEN #2 MAG-IT comes with five magnets only - here is a pic with four on the plate.

How many does the Trini A get?
For adjustments, if you have 3 sets etc, and you have your marks where you set them, if you need to make minor adjustments, can you just move 1 x magnet up or down, or do you have to move all 3, probably a dumb question....:)

A series takes 1, It has a long range of travel so the magnet can be moved from close to the spool shaft to up to 2cm upward and closer to the rim of the spool.

It is fitted on the handle side of the reel and the magnet is very close to the spool

In the Tor 20 or 30 it is on the left side plate and there is a large gap between plate and spool.

The Fathom mag-it is on the handle side and there is very little room for adjusting so 1.5mm thick magnets of smaller diameter are used in different quantities to manage the spool. (Very similar situation with the Tor 50)

The reason for this is that the reel designs and spacing and odds and ends in each of the reels differ from Brand to Brand and even model to model in each brand.

It's not a question of one system fits all types of reels.

Plate sizes, shapes and thicknesses differ vastly

Magnet diameters and thicknesses differ

Here is a clip I just received from a very chuffed Cape Sealiner, putting his MAG-IT Trini 20A through it's paces.

Rod is a BM SS 60/100/430 and he used 6oz lead.

Previous max distance achieved with his unmagged 20A and same rod, while thumbing and having tension on the spoolshaft via the cast control knob, was 130m - he now gets 167m with a loose spool and zero thumbing !

Just a slight extension to start a simple straight forward, but classic cast.

Thanks Mark - all the IT tech stuff just got too much for this old timer, trying to do it all from my phone while on the move !!!

How's that for a super smooth casting stroke, loading that SuperSlim fully with so little apparent effort ?

Some of us can load a rod, but in a way that it will look to bystanders, as if you are going to tear something eina down there in the process - I for one wish I had such a smooth effortless casting stroke while loading that rod so nicely!
