|Was a stunning late afternoon saturday 21/03/2015 and after getting moaned at by the wife about bait in the freezer... I said I'd get rid of it... and went fishing!
Got down to Gonubie point at about 4pm and conditions were looking perfect for a tooth. There were already about 5 rods in the water which made me think That I wasn't the only one with high hopes of it being a great day.
Set up and slid a yellowtail head, sat down and waited.
The afternoon was dead quiet. Even going into dark was dead.
Around 8pm I changed my bait and still with high hopes, slid the back end of the yellow tail.
I must say, it was a rather surreal moment. I was sitting on a bench looking at the stars everything was dead quiet.... then CHAOS ERUPTED!!!!
I looked over to my rod and saw it bending and my reel screeming for help!!! Ran over, picked it up and set hooks!! ON DAD... I was into my braid in a matter of seconds and had me worried because of the 600m 50lb braid I only had about 300m left and this thing was heading straight to... whatever on the other side...
5 Min into the fight, Gareth, the last guy that was with me as everyone else buggered off, was pulled flat.. his fish screamed streight to the river mouth... damn .. hooks pulled...
I was still on and managed to get back around 150m but still in the braid. We decided to take it to the beach as the fish was heading to the point now and we wanted to get a better angle on him.
Anyway, just on 3 hours later with aching arms and back, being nearly spooled no less than 3 times, we managed to land a very strong male Zambi of around 160kg's. Measured him at 211cm.
Happyness is me!!
Rod used... trusty old L & F Sharky
Reel... Saltist 50 600m 50lb braid and 300m .50 perline
Slid a Yellow Tail back end with 2 x 12/0 J's
