Bait Presentation

Good Day All

I have seen a similar threat in the R&S section and think it would be a good idea to have one in the Fresh water section.

Lets post a few picture of how we present our baits and share a few ideas. Hopefully this help some of us get a few ideas and catch a couple more fish.

Because i have seen this catch big fish on the river before. Normal on the Dam's i use a single floatie with just a little plain dough backing.

Please post some pictures of your bait presentation.

bought it from Western Accessories will try and remember to check for the name tonight. R40 for 2kg bag. it has peanuts, hempseed, bird seed and then the normal melliebomb. then added mulvite porridge (can get it from normal shops near the pronutro)

Were we my boy was throwing handfuls into the water i saw lots of little fish coming to eat it. so i am sure it will work 1st time i have used it.

Let's start at the begining. Your bait presentation is important but so is your workarea. It needs to be easy to clean and functional. Lots of people use the worktrays on their stands, or an battlebox. I personally made my work area in my drawer leaving my main box neat and clean while fishing.

The top of my box, staying neat while fishing:

In my drawer I have storage space for 2 prepared traces, along with my dough/floats being used, with my dips being used placed next to my floats

Dont think i have ever seen such a neatly organised setup in my life. Very impressive.
I normally start off quiet organised but by 5 hours in its a mess especially seeing as i let other people use my stuff.

Then to get to the baits!

Personally I never use large baits. I will allways fish small baits period.

To enable a good, small bait presentation I will use an 0,8 hook 99% of the time, an nr2 on occasion, and a nr5 when fishing for barbel. The reason for the smaller baits is because I feel, and have with personal experience, found that both a large fish and a small fish will eat a small bait, sometimes even without realising it.

On the flip side of the coin a large bait (example 4 floats on a hook) will only hook a large fish where one would not have the opportunity to land a smaller fish.

Personally my bait choices are as follows:

1) Small piece of dough
2) Small floaty
3) Small floaty with a piece of dough
4) Half a mielie
5) 1 or 2 worms depending on my target species and the conditions.

Here is an indication of my bait sizes. This is slightly larger than I would fish normaly but I believe it gives an good impression:

Thank you very much! I am in the fortunate position where I am the only one fishing from my box, so I luckily manage to keep it clean

Hi Guys

I am new to the forum and to fishing. I wanted to start a thread like this as I am struggling with this.

I have gone out 3 times now to the vaal River to catch and have bought all kinds of dips and bombs and mealies and and and.

However I don't seem to be doing to well. So I have a couple of questions.

1 - I made a dough as per the recipes found on the forum and tried adding it onto the hook as shown on the photos above, however every time I reel in to reset the dough seems to be either off or pulls like a string. Is this normal?

2 - The bread dough I make seems to fall off all the time with casting

3 - Tried floaties but they seem to come off as well in the water. Could this be due to the brand?

4 - Mealie Pips has caught me some fish, however I would like to make sure how many pips to put on my hook

To put everything into perspective I normally buy the ready made "Stropies" from the tackle shop and use them.

Also my new rod has not had a single bite in 3 full days of fishing. Could this be due to the line on the combo rod reel?

Thank you in advance.

Hi there Cornelius

Dough, and floaties, does tend to come of after being in the water for some time.

Those readymade traces ussualy have quite large hooks on them that would prevent you from hooking smaller fish.

Where about in Johannesburg are you based? Perhaps we can meet up and work through the basics?

Also, if you would like to join a club to speed up the learning process, feel free to send me a pm!

Thanks Dewald

I am based in Roodepoort. I will definitely take you up on that offer, however we are expecting a baby with in the next 2 or 3 weeks, so fishing will have to hang ten for a little bit.

Any theory regarding the new rod not getting any bites?

No worries! The baby will ofcourse come first!

Regarding the new rod. I think it would rather be due to the pre made traces with large hooks, however the thick line on the reel might play a role with regard to your casting distance achievable and sensitivity.

My best advice would be to obtain traces with smaller hooks, perhaps size 2 daichi's or simmilar, and some 10lb line on the reel to aid in casting and sensitivity. You can then on a later stage go down on line thickness as you learn how to fight fish better.
