In short we blanked terribly, not even one decent bite the whole of saturday. Fishing was quiet, only saw a couple caught by the other anglers.

This section of the Vaal River, i cant seem to figure out (below barrage).

Have tried a few times and dont seem to catch consistently. Any advice out there?

Same here, worms worked well last time my brothers n family were there, this time nothing.

Atish, we sat to the right hand side, camp sites 15 n 16. I think the fishings probably better to the left hand side. Have you been here before?

I've found that section of the river equally unpredictable. This time of year I usually avoid that area because in my experience the fish, esp carp would be spawning. They would be quite active, but no bites. I would usually get a few muddies, and I've seen guys pulling out cats on the bigger earthworms - slang wurms, not kariba's. But as a rule of thumb, I wait till I think spawning is over before I visit that section of the river. Just my 2c

Which section of the river would you suggest to go this time of the year?

fished Nonyana 2 weeks back, extreme left, next to the 'jetty'.lots of muddies on floaties, worms, bread and egg. its very snaggy towards centre of river, tried for cats, each hookup and it snagged me.
what also worked was strawberry floaties and bleeding floats.
wana go camp there soon....

If I really wanted to go fish the river, I would try places upstream on the Vaal, before the river enters the dam, Aqua Via or Kollege Plaas, or even Villiers.

Thanks Steel, the issue is that those places are too far away from me, I need a spot just for the day, that section of the river is only 40 min drive away from me

Guys from what i can see the river looks the same the entire stretch.
there may be some different structure under but what difference would your location make as the river looks the same all the way through?

Well my opinion, underwater structure would play a part. And also from that pic it would seem the channel is much closer to those spots straight down from the road, hence you casting into deeper pools.

Correct me if im wrong, arent there a set of rapids closer to the left? If thats the case, my assumption is that the bigger fish would be closer to the rapids in the deep pools, waiting for the food to flush downriver.

Where did you get this pic btw

Yes, I've been there. Fished the left side. Haven't had any problems on the left but lot of snags on the left too.

Hi guys

Good luck for 2015, May there be no blanks this year;)

Went back to Nonyana with the family this weekend, much better this time round. Caught around 20 fish in total inc about 7 carp between 1 and 2.5 kg. quite a few muddies as well on sat mornin. The fish were biting mainly at night and very early morning. The biggest one caught on the smallest rod about 10m from the bank, gave my 9yr old cuz quite a fight!

Baits that worked were bleeding floaties (pineapple, almond and tutti fruit), swd and almond dough. Neighbors also caught a nice 4.5kg carp on mielies and some others caught with brown bread with honey.

Didn't use too many dips as it didn't seem to influence the bites. During the day was v quiet. Overall quite a nice trip.

I'm starting to think the vaal river fishes better after December than before, just my own experiences.

There was a 12kg lurking around there last year March. Some deep waters to the left near the jetty. Glad you had a much better experience this time round. :dban:

Bottom structure is definately a telling factor. I was fishing the river once and cast all my baits in the middel of the river.(Thinking that is where the deep water is1). Later after checking the deep water was much closer to the side and I was casting on rocks 1m below the surface!

Since then, I always try to take my small boat with so I can check out the section I want to fish.(just using a along stick/rod).The sub structure varies a lot in the river.

This will indicate where the open pockets are. I normally look for a open pocket/hole with a drop-off and a gravel bottom.

Mielies and floats always seem to produce on short outings and some tigernuts for longer sessions and bigger fish have worked for me in the past.

I always use molasses in my mealie bomb when fishing the river.
