Hi Guys

Hope we all well.

Im looking for some tips on Fishing Cape Town over the December holidays. I normally fish the Rocks every weekend, with some surf fishing occasionally.

Im gonna be in CT for a week ( spending time with the Inlaws :cens ) . I would rather catch a few fish ;)

Can anyone shed some light on where to fish, traces ,bait .. Would like to target crackers, galjoen,Big Dassie.. any info would be greaty appreciated.

If anybody is available, lets hook up 072 271 1936

Over december your best targets will be Kob, Elf, and possibly Geelbek. Also plenty sharks (Big Bronzies, Raggies, spotted gulley sharks, Smoothhounds) and flatfish around that time of year. You won't find cracker in Cape Waters and you won't be allowed to catch Galjoen as it will be closed season. Dassies and White Stump are also a possibility.

Are there any good fishing suggestion further up the West Coast , around St Helena Bay and Velddrif
Velddrif has the Berg estuary which is chock full of small elf, there are also good non-edible options in that stretch as well as hottentot and the odd kob in the kelp if the water is brown.

Thanks Captain , I would like to target Hotties and Cob , but I think they are fairly scarce over December , hopefully not._seal1_
Hotties are thick up there all year, especially around Tietiesbaai and Dwarskersbos...the kob will show when the water warms up above 16/17deg. Saldanha and Langebaan also good options, and if you have access to a boat St Helena has a lot of snoek (more in winter) and gets some showings of yellowtail periodically.

We are building a house at St Helena Bay , ill be there with my Boat in December , I have caught elf in the Burg river , but the last time I was out in the bay on my boat in December we had no luck ,the snoek would probably be deep out where the commercial fishermen go , or would we be able to catch closer to shore , off St Helena near Stompneus Bay ,near the rocks ,do you think we would be able to get some hotties or Galjoen.

You will definitely catch hotties near the  kelp on drift baits or light tackle on your boat. Galjoen will be scarce and are out of season anyway in summer. Lots of snoek are caught right in the bay, just depends if you get lucky, same with the tail. My advice would be to fish light for the hotiies and bank fish, and throw a few whole sardines over the side (no sinkers) on an 8/0 for a lucky kob, snoek or tail...

Which beach nearest Cape Town would be best for non eds?
Strandfontein is 35 mins from Cape Town city centre and full of nasty toothy critters. That would probably be my suggestion. On the Atlantic seaboard/ West  coast you can also catch many species of non-eds, but not to the same degree and size. Otherwise, Langebaan lagoon has some giant sharks and rays in it, including the odd thresher...

Anywhere at Langebaan or are there spots that are better than others? I use a bait boat so I can drop a bait 500m from shore.

Search the forums for Spreeuwalle. Saldanha also an option. With a bait boat you should really try Strandfontein (Tweede Baai or Gunnery good) for a bronzie...
