What reel for carp dipping rod?

Bought myself a Mitchell Privilege Pro 4.3m (120g-180g) telescopic rod at the Mias 50% off sale. At R750 this was a real bargain as it way cheaper than what it retails for anywhere in SA and even online.

(pic shows the 4,2m, but the 4,3m looks exactly the same ...)

Now I need a reel to pair it with.

Already now that most people pair theirs with a low profile baitcaster. What specs must I look out for (drag, bearings, retrieve etc).

Any specific reels anyone would want to suggest (no bank-breakers please ...)

Also recommendations on line, leader?

The rod also has a white tip. I can remember reading/hearing somewhere that it's better to paint the tip black as a bright or white tip could spook carp - do you recommend doing this and would normal spraypaint work?

180grams is a 6oz tip? the barbel calling rods are based on a 6oz blank... isnt it way too stiff?

guys only use baitcasters for 2 reasons - 1 it saves space 2 - the oldschool guys dont trust coffeegrinders and/or they had an old baitcaster lying around

I tried the baitcaster thing, hated it. MUCH prefer my slade 2500 on my dipping rod. MUCH MUCH more stable when holding it because the eyes and the reel arent trying to fall down the whole time(gravity pulls them sideways when not perfectly vertical). The coffeegrinder pulling down keeps the whole rig stable and its one less thing to worry about. Grinder also gives better line capacity and drag. I wouldnt go for a 1000 due to capacity issues (hooking a beast) and a 4000 will be miles too heavy.

So those are the reasons I'd recommend a 2500 size grinder. Mine is loaded with green 10lb suffix braid and I always use a 12lb fluorocarbon leader. No line breaks yet after many fish and a lot of snotterbelle and hyacinth

Thanks for the advice.

Never thought of the spinning reel option.

I'll try the rod with my 2500 Sienna and by Abu baitcaster and see what feels better.

Don't think it's too stiff, compared to the Awa Shima Ganken's 150-200g casting weight range.

First saw Takkie using it on his Untamed Fishing Adventures Facebook page. He said that apart from the carp, they've also landed decent barbel on it, so it sounds quite versatile.

Can't wait to try it out properly on some carp and small stream/spruit barbel.

2500 sienna will be perfect :) I have a spaghetti tipped rod which is fine cos the backbone is there to pull hard if need be but the soft tip allows gentleness when the carp is barely hooked. Ganken is all backbone, I dislike the action

Check the roodekopjes video where we catch at the dam wall. It shows how we use the grinders on long dipping rods for carp

Cool, thanks will do.

My Sienna 2500 has subdued a 6.9kg barbel paired with my 7'M spinning rod, so I'm sure it'll cope with carp on the long rod.

Cheers
