Ja, me and two buds bought a nice oldish bass boat about 4/5 months ago, so we also roam the waters these days.

Thinking of roodeplaat on Saturday in search of some mermaids, given up on bass in that water.

Sounds like a challenge,I shall be doing an exploratory cruise this weekend just to avail myself of my home-waters.Not very optimistic, but worth checking out, plenty carp of 2-2.5 kilos coming out, nice food for barbel. It is still a bit chilly here in the good old Free-State,but soon it will be time .

How's about we go for 20 kg's and only get allowed pics of 10 kg's and above to be posted.lol

Fellow WHISKA WHIPPERS

I regret to inform thou ,that I have failed you dismally,my brothers,my quests this weekend not even worthy of a photo ,a mere sibling of only 22 lbs, 1000 grams away from your approval for a photo image,I beg for more time to prove I am worthy of this fellowship, and will endeavour with cunning and haste to meet your required standards, using much of my overdraft facility and lots of my idle time to comply.

I trust that you accept my apologies, and  I will unfortunately not render my resignation ,from this Elite band of brothers as yet .Summer is lurking around the mountains and vales.

I trust every other member ,have complied with our 10 kilo photo criteria, somehow I do not see any of these photos

One of my most memorable fights was with a barbel in Harties that I couldn't land (line snap after 25 minutes due to inexperience). Now, I'm a self proclaimed R&S guy, but thanks to you guys I've realised I've got a score to settle with the whiskahs! Lets see how it goes. Maybe I can entice something larger than a wee pup. The challenge is for lures only, right?

Guys

Yet again, not much joy ,best I could muster during this morning's "yard cleaning avoidance manouvre" was 10 kg's on the one mickey mouse lip-grip and 9 kg's on the other.I'll take the 9 like a man.Shows you 'goedkoop koop is duur koop" that is the reason for the dual lip-grips,the one that slid back into oblivion from one of these cheap jobs,a little earlier, was obviously bigger than 10 kg's.

Have you ever heard an angler say '"boy I lost a small fish today"?, me neither, so it must have been bigger than 10 kg's Note the very red left hand ,as we got caught smack-bang in the cold front as it hit the northern Free-State this morning.

Ignore the "WATCH THIS SPACE " from two posts earlier,I retire for this weekend.

Down ,but not out, yet

You oke's are sharp here on the Barbel forums,I honestly thought it was going to be one of those private jokes that only I know of. Maar nee,die barbel -hunters are sharper than old Minora shaving blades. LOL .On the rare occassion that I do watch the show in question I honestly do it with the volume on mute.No offence meant to the guy,but sometimes its a bit much. lol::S

Relax Ryan ,it wasn't caught on lure, and it was only 12 kg's.Why I post the pic is because I would like to know your opinion of the "frayed" pectoral -fin.Do you think it could be from spawning,? So early in the year, water temp is only 15 degrees at noon.Is it a disease? , or was it in a fight perhaps.?

Jeez boet Nice pics - keep them comming.
YEah that looks like Spawn fins - but question - is it only one fin that has damage?
Reason I ask is I fished Arabie dam last year and I saw a barbel that was hooked and "Fighting" for it's life being latched on by another on one of it's pectoral fins - very hard to see in your photie but it looks like fairly fresh blood on that fin.
Carp start spawning at 19
Barbel in my experince require 21 - hence them usually spawning after the carp - this is my humble experince.
I am taking big time notes this year.
Carp require 17 to come on to artlue nicely........
Jeez bud it looks like you are serious about this challenge

Naa not really ,had a bit of time to kill this morning, now that you mention it Ryan on more than one occassion have I hooked a barbel and then one could clearly see it being followed around by one/other barbel. Yes the mark looks fresh to me,no blood oozing out but definately recent, unless it is something that is taking longer to heal than it should.  Imagine the size of Cat that will challenge a 12 kilo job even if it is hooked. There are definately no signs of spawning ,way too cold still,in fact there was very few signs of barbel today as well.Carp frollicking vertically ,which never bodes to well for fly,I need them in schools 2 feet  or so below surface.

The joys of the Platteland,30 minutes from home to in da drink, sometimes even faster.I took some snaps of my home-made ,mickey mouse ,shortsh%t  klopstokkie, ugliest yellowblack thing you can think of,will try to upload them under "roepstok" to give Marthin an idea.
