Melkbos

Can a person dive and shoot fish in and around melkbos?  I'm not into shooting the monsters the other pro's have on here, just want a hottie or the likes for the braai, perhaps a kob if i can get close enough?  I just saw this nice looking spot the other day and was wondering why nobody is diving around there.

You can dive there, but there is reserve off to the left, past the "vlei" - not sure exactly where. But the vlei, and everything north is diveable - the vlei is the very weedy / kelpy bay left of the main area in front of the NSRI. Guys get the kob in front of the NSRI, and also in the vlei. You also get hotties, white stump, elf, big dassies and white steenbras there at times. Just be careful as a steenbras has to be 60cm, and most of the fish there are small. It is a very finicky place, does not clean up often though, so if you know it is clean, please let me know as I live far away from it, but love the chance at a kob :).
Cheers,
Tony

It was beautiful about 2 weeks ago... the water was crystal clear, with only a wave breaking about 10 feet from the shore. Absobloodylutely useless for fishing but you must have been able to see a mile under the water.

Can anybody say where the reserve part starts??

As far as I know the reserve is only for crayfish. It starts pretty much at the end of the vlei going towards Blouberg, there is a beacon on the dune marking it.

If the water is clean and warm, the fish will be there, but normally clean means cold and then it becomes a scratch.

As Tony said,in front of the NSRI there is kob to be had in the right conditions, fish of up to 15kg have been taken there.

Hi Martin,
In what context is this? There are two beacons I know of - one at Millers at CBSC, and one at partidge point - is it one of these?

I dunno they talk about a MB1 beacon at Melkbos that you can not dive for crayfish any further south than this point.

As I mentioned in the previous post,it is a tall black pole at the end of the vlei.It is situated up on the dune next to where the fishermans path comes out from the coastal road. There would be no need to hunt in the kelp that far towards the end of the vlei anyway, all the kob we have got have been in front of or to the right of the last parking lot next to the NSRI.
