Swim bait reel

Does anyone have any experience on what the ideal swimbait reel would be, it would only be used for swimming large baits and paddling large baits out to target sharks.

I will spool what ever I get with braid.

Would a torium 50 be adequate or is the line capacity a little small.

My other thoughts would be to get an offshore reel, nothing too fancy to suit the pocket. Maybe a daiwa 900h

Any ideas on what reel would be best suited for swimming large swimbaits in the eastern cape, mainly off deep water points.

Depends on your budget, perhaps if you want to look at an offshore reel - try and get a secondhand Penn Senator 9/0

Swimbait / paddle bait require big pulling power so thicker lines. Tor 50 will do on 75% of the fish but those really big duskies and zambi's will empty it one time.

TLD 50 II Speed Lever Drag new as a budget reel would be my answer R1000 more expensive than the Torium.

Not the 900H as it doesn't have the drag for what you want to do.

Just out of comparison sake, what would the line capacity be on a TLD 50, if it was spooled with 60LB braid been 0.4mm compared with a torium 50.

Is there anyway a person could upgrade the older reel designs like the 900h or the penn senetar's with fancy drag systems, or is that impossible.

The next question would it be possible to fish these reels, including the TLD on the conventional 14foots, or would you have to match it to an offshore type of rod

Double the capacity. Probably 2400m of 60lbs

Fill it with 1200m 80lbs or 800m 100lbs and top off with 0.80mm

You can add smoothdrag to the Daiwa but then the remainder of the reel is not up to the power the drag will put on the reel's components.

You can use a 14' because if you straight stick with the rod it pulls hard. The rod however must be something in the /8 class to match the drag and line

So the TLD has more that adequate line capacity on it for pretty much any swim bait off any point around here.

Another question would be what length of line would you put on above the backing, would 200m of say 0.8 be sufficient, followed obviously by a sufficient leader

YOu can chat with Burnt off on the Forum (Willie) he has landed a number of Tkei sizers with his TLD 50 and Greg Kellerman now in EL also has one rigged.

Yes 200m of 0.80 or even 140m of 1mm is recommended for protection and yes a serious windon.

I mean you are going to battle giants so rigging with lighter tackle would be like taking a rifle to a tank battle it'll be fun while it lasts but you will not win the war.

Also with swimbaits remember to make the steel part of the trace at least 6m or you will experience what a number of PE and Mazeppa fishermen have experienced the last few months.

That is bitten off leaders. Remember the predator is chasing the prey from behind (he won't bite the prey "shark swimbait" from the front "It has TEETH")

If the swimbait turns to evade being eaten the leader is in the way of the predator and WILL be bitten off.

What length leader would be ideal, would a 10m long 2mm thick leader be sufficient, and would a Dacron windon type join between the 1mm and 2mm be the way forward.

Would a 30cm windon be sufficient, ie the Dacron going into the leader be long enough, or should that length even be longer.

Thanks for the help, think I'll be getting my self a TLD then

Hi Skaap hope this info helps you out: I have a Tyrnos 50II lever drag reel(same specs and size as the TLD 50II) and I loaded it with 850m of 100lb HMP braid and 280m of 0.8mm then the reel is 100% full, so that should give you a pretty good idea of what amount of braid/line you can fit onto a TLD 50II sized reel.

Standard windon connection probably 200lbs connector. It's used for Marlin fishing off of boats on 130lbs rigs using 1.2mm mainline so for swimbaiting it's plenty good.

I would go 6-10m windon through tot a ball bearing or 3/0 power swivel to 4m 1.5mm cable swimbait rig
