Hi Sealiners
Like most people I was thought to fish with a grinder but now that I want to start going for the bigger fish I want a multiplier. My uncle gave me a old Penn 500 but it is giving me alot of problems. I have a shimano exage 1468. What reel would fit best with that. I don't want to spend to much money but I also don't want to buy crap.
plz help^^..
I need a all round reel that is easy to cast because I don't have much experience with multipliers

Haven't checked pricing lately, but should be well under R1k.

Phone the tackle shops in your area.

The Shimano TLD Star 20/40 is a reliable, simple design. I have one that is 10 years old and never had a problem. Many old fisherman have one of these in the bag. Classic reel.

Hi vis vinder - I fully agree with the general advice you received here on Sealine, but would like to add to it. The TLD 1530/2040 and Speedmaster IV, are strong, well designed, lightweight reels, with rugged stainless steel main- and pinion gears. They provide the perfect platform for some basic customising that will have you end up with a still affordable reel, that can cast and perform with reels costing four times as much (including the custom work)! Speak to Old Salt on this forum - he can get any of these three reels spinning like a top with addition of a spool-bearing to replce the leftside bush, undercutting the spoolshaft on his lathe and using special lubes. Speed without control, can be a dangerous thing and to control the newfound speed, he can fit you the "MAG-IT" internal Magnetic Cast Control System that really allow you to fully load the rod, while minimising the risk of the dreaded "kraaines"/backlash/overrun. This modification benefits the beginner and expert alike and I had a phonecall last night from a very experienced angler (D Swart) on this forum, who had his two 1530's fitted with the "MAG-IT" before the holidays and he will gladly share the info on the advantages he is all of a sudden experiencing in casting these reels with the device fitted. The reels look stock-standard from the outside and it normally brings a puzzled look to the faces of anglers fishing the same reels next to you, when you are really punching your casts past them without the expected "blow-ups" ! For fishing for larger edibles and sharks, Carbontex drag washers are available to give a ultra smooth and more powerfull drag to these reels. So, as you can see, they are not just cheapy reels for beginners ! Enjoy !

thanx cuban cigar that really helps a lot. what do u think of the adrenalin x-master 40. Can those things be fitted into it to

Buy a Tld 15/30 or 20/40 or a Daiwa Sealine 50. Rather buy a second hand reel on the forum than a master x.
In the beginning dond modify the reels. You wont be able to controll it. I have a pimped 15/30 so I know.

At this stage, the magbrakes are only available for the most popular reels like the TLD1530/2040,Speedmaster IV or III (if you could still find one in good nick), Torium 16/20/30, Grandwave 40/50 and SL50SH with new models on the way for the Saltist range etc. I would normally rather stay on the conservative side and stick to well-proven brands and models with spares and backup freely available, but this does not mean that "newcomer products" cannot prove themselves as good and reliable in time. I do not have any firsthand experience with the Adrenalin x-master reels - other members ?

Hi Armand - have a chat with Dirk about the magbrakes on his two stages of modded TLD's - he can now take his left thumb away after launching the cast and watch the reel running free during the cast, despite backing tha spoolknob out to have a small amount of sideplay - it's actually easier to cast than the stock-standard from the box reel ! The same goes for the Grandwaves - you can amost cast them Ambassadeur-style (no thumbing needed)after fitting the brake and for the few of us using it, it actually adds distance to the cast, because you can now really let fly without thumburns etc. You are probably right - he will appreciate the difference even more if he used the reel as is before any mods. Cheers !

PM Old Salt for a specified quote on a mod by mod basis - you can then decide what to have done at what stage - he is in Brackenfell so it's easy for Capetonians. The costing on the magbrakes will vary according to the specific model/size of reel, as this determine the quantity of the special highpower, corrosion resistant magnets used. They are mounted on a spcial highly magnetic/corrosion resistant stainless chassis inside the reels. Regards !

Cuban Cigar,

Sorrie man, I missred the part about the mag brakes!! I was talking about the mods Old salt does to make the spool spin quicker.

Do you know if the mag is ajusteble?
I love my pimped 15/30! Problem is it is not shiny!

Hi Armand - the model for the 1530 is supplied standard with six of the magnets as we found that most guys use either 5 or 6 depending on their casting stroke and the amount of freespool on that specific reel and obviously the sinker weight they prefer. Both Dirk and myself prefer six on our Old Salt modded (stage 1 with bearing and undercut machining of the spoolshaft) 1530's, but some prefer 5 only. On the (stage 2 modded reels with Hybrid splitshaft),the jury is still out on six or seven magnets , also depending on all the other variables incl the use of either braid or nylon. As the magnets are mounted in a + then - polarity alternating arrangement on the special s/s magnetic plate fitted inside the reel, they keep one another from moving with the massive magforce created. You can simply very carefully slide a magnet or two from the plate or slide a extra one or two onto the plate to have more or less magforce during testcasting your own rig to find the perfect setup for you - extra magnets are available to add if needed- remember that I also mentioned that we run the spoolknob loose with a small amount of endplay with the added bonus that the spoolbearings should also last longer without the normal tention needed. Cleaned out bearings lubed with ReelX run very quietas there is no mechanical link between the spool and magnets as in the case of centrifugal brakes and give great control without robbing you of distance. I was really surprised to learn during my own testing, that you do not need massive freespool for a decent cast, rather a reel that runs in balance, only feeding as much line as the sinker can take away. I did a demo for a friend of mine who is really not even a very average caster(Dirk can tell you as he was present)and this guy could simply not cast his Grandwave 40 on the two-piece version of you PG rod with six ounces of leadwithout it blowing up on every single cast, but we had him making average casts of 120 plus meters within a few minutes without using any thumb after launching the cast,d we could not get the grin off his face as he made cast after cast - I know it's no long cast, but just imagine what it can do for the better casters if it did this for a rookie ! Have a chat with Dirk, his 1530's foud new life after fitting it. Cheers !
