I have all the materials listed in this tutorial available if you cannot find it.

I want to start by saying I am no John Williamson, but I have made a few lures in the past and some quite successful. I have also spent many hours using various lures and do consider how and why certain lures work in various conditions. My goal this season is to make my own lures and to avoid buying anything I don't need to. Trolling lures aka conas are probably the easiest lures to make. They require very little moulding preparation and all lures will work in various conditions. Work to cost ratio, they are also the most over priced lures available.

I am not going to discuss what lure shapes do what here. We can discuss this later on via questions and discussions but I will talk about weighting lures later on.

For now, lets just concentrate on the building process.

The first step is to make a plug. The plug is a dummy that we will use to make the mould. These are usually made from wood, sanded, painted, sanded, polished etc. etc. What I now do, is I cast plugs from F16 / F19 PU. I have made a silicone mould and when I have excess PU resin, I pour slugs in various diameters for use later on. The advantage of this is I can machine, sand and polish the plug in one go without and paint in between. Also, the PU is consistent and easy to machine and sand. Then as a bonus, you basically have a prototype to test before moulding for the final product.

Bear in mind though, this is only a guide. If you do not have facilities to machine your lure then copy your favourite lure. Maybe you have a lure that you really like the shape but would like to make it lighter or in different colours etc. Just skip to the moulding part.

Here is the slug I make.

I machine the head general shape on a wood lathe with wood chisels and sand to s a smooth finish with 200 / 360 / 600 / 800 and finally 1000 grit paper. I machine the tail end first the then turn it around to do the head shape.

You also need to drill a 4mm hole through the head.

This was going to be a slant head, so I then sanded the head at an angle on the belt sander.

You want to get the head as smooth as possible. The more you do now, the less you need to do on each head later on.

Drill a 4mm hole in the wood. This step may not be absolutely critical but it will help keep the lure in position and keep it centered.

You need to rest the tube at an angle to fill. This is to prevent air from being trapped on the grooves when filling with the Silicone..

As it fills, you can lift the pipe to fill.
It is important that you fill to at least 20mm above the head. The hole that the tube leaves in the center will hold the insert in position when pouring.

That's it for part 1.

In part 2 we are actually going to make a lure. This one will be unweighted. It would be intended for the condition most of us fish. Calmer seas with Tuna Dorado and general game fish in mind so troll speed would be on the lower end at 5-7 knots. Mear in mind, it is resin not plastic, so it isn't necessary going to require lead. Many commercial lures look like they have lead inserts but aren't. Some are just resin and some are actually foam to make them even lighter. (we will be doing that later on). The Pakula sprocket, one of the best lures around the world has no lead in it. In fact it has a little foam in it.

Anyway, this lure shows the basics of inserts and it is a very successful concept. By the end of this section anyone with limited skills will be able to make their own lures.

So in part 1 we made a mould.  Cut 2 slits on oposit sides of the mould only upto the shoulder with a hobby knife. This will help demoulding.

Now we need an insert. Decide on the size you need. in my case, the smallest diameter of my lure is 20mm so I'm going to make the insert 16mm wide. The head is 30mm so I want it at least 40mm long. So I cut a piece of holographic tape 17mm X 80mm long.

Then push a 2mm straightened wire through a piece of 2mmX4mm tubing. Mine is about 120mm long I guess. It needs to be at least 50mm longer than the lure.
Slip the tube through the hole of the tape and fold it back to stick to it's self.
When positioning it, consider the length of the tube that fits in the hole of the mould and allow 1 or 2mm so the insert is well within the head.

Casting:

Here is what you need:
Resin - Polyclear 555 from AMT. Costs around R70 for 1kg pack. You can also get the same stuff from NCS but they sell in 5kg packs and it's the same price any way.
Plastic cup for mixing in - These I got from party shop - 50c each
Something to stir with - Tong depressors still the best. - R15 for 100. Also from AMT
A scale - I have a 200 gram jewelers scale. This is really handy as it weighs in fractions of a gram to 2 decimals. I got mine on Bid Or Buy for about R200. So it isn't expensive. If you dont have one, you can use this guide. Measure out 50ml of resin and add 25 drops of catalist. Obviously for 25ml use 12 drops.

I recommend decanting your resin into one of these water/juice bottles. Make metering / pouring much easier with more control.

I insert the "insert" into the mould till the "insert" touches the bottom, then I pull it back about 1mm. Note the mark I made on the mould. That is so I know which way is top and bottom since I have a slant head.
I have used a very light elastic band to keep the mould together.

I measure out 40grams in the cup using my scale. Not noticeable here but it has a blue tinge to it.

When you mix it, it will turn a green. Don't worry, it goes clear again when it cures. This is a sign to show it is properly mixed.
Then you need to let is sit for 5 or so minutes and it will expel all the air bubbles.

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT TIP: Once all the air has escaped... you pour the resin into the mould, holding it at 45 degrees. Let the resin flow close to the outer edge of the mould and then rotate the mould to line the skirt ridges with resin before filling. This will prevent air bubbles getting trapped on the ridges.

There might be air escaping from the insert we made. these can be popped using a lighter. The same can be done to get rid of those last nuisance bubbles in the cup before pouring. However it will catch fire so you have to blow it out immediately.

This part may seem tedious but it isn't. It really takes just minutes.
We are going to clean and sand the head. I use a drill to spin it and clean the head first with a rag drenched in acetone then I use various grit sand paper from 220 grit to 1000 grit. to sand it with water.

How to make an insert.

So I'm happy with the outcome of my lure so I am now going to make an insert for the head "the professional way" but also so I can weight it if I want to.

First I take the original plug and I need to sand the head into a rectanular shape just smaller than the head it's self.

You will also need to make it a little shorter so it is totally encapsulated in the head. It needs to be into the first skirt groove but not the second.

Then you can make a mould of this. Simple mould. Same as we did for the head but this time the need the tube to be held by the mould on both sides. This required that you cut a sprew into it afterwards.

I made my mould with a previous lure. Now I just cast a whole bunch of these and use them as required. Sometimes I need to cut them a little short or bevel the end...
You can also use the mould to pour lead to make a lead insert if you want to weigh the lure down. Preferably though, the mould should be made from Mould Max 60. See http://sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=86739&forum_id=78

Then basically wrap the insert in Holographic tape. I would recommend cutting individual pcs for each side, top, bottom and front. Cut it slightly over size, stick and trip with hobby knife.

Some eyes and decals.

I will cut basic eyes from vinyl free for anyone who is already at the mould stage. But you will have to pay for postage.

Refit the tube / 2mm wire and we are ready to cast our second lure.

TIP: If you struggle to get the tube back into the lure/insert. grab the tube/wire in your drill and "spin" it into the lure. Works like a charm.

This is also a nice idea. Same insert but I painted the insert with resin and covered it in glitter. Once dry I coated it with resin again before adding the eyes. The eyes are moulded in moulds I made.

Hi,
I get it from Midas.
The polish is brilliant. I use it on everything from my lure heads to my spoons. But you must get the metal polish, they make different formulas like scratch remover.

Instead of using Polyclear 555, you can also use Epaxacast 690 (available from AMT).

Disadvantages:
1 - It is going to take 2-3 days to cure properly
2 - Very expensive at about R350 for 1kg pack. Polyclear is R70.
3 - Limited life of your mould. Not serious if you keep your plug to make another.

Advantages:
1 - Extremely durable
2 - Impact resistant
3 - NO Polishing required at all. As long as you mould is right.
4 - Easier mixing ratios 100:30
5 - Will readily accept tints

Thanks Bennie, That's truly a great tutorial. Some questions I have.

1, Whats the average price of making a mould?
2, Where can I purchase that pink mould making stuff? (in KZN)
3, Whats the average price of making a lure? Excluding mould including all hooks, leaders, skirts etc.
4, How long does that mould last?
5, Time to build a mould? Time to build a complete lure?
thanks Bennie and kudos for the tutorial. Manna added!

Hi

1- the cost for a mould is anything from R10-R50.

2 - you can get the pink "stuff" from AMT Composites.

3 - average price would be about R100 with stainless hook. But catching a fish on you own lure... Priceless.

4 - indefinitely in theory.

5 - it takes me 24 hours from plug to final product in some cases. Could do it quicker if tested.

With regards to question 4, from one of my moulds I made I have made around 100 castings and it is still perfect.

So, in a short space of time, I have thought about a spread and made lures accordingly. I think this will be a great stripey spread.

So since the moulds last for a very long time, I'm guessing the actual cost per lure goes down the more you make?

For your skirts, best value for money, 9.5" and 12" get from Demon tackle. I have also just received a shipment of mixed 9,5" and 12" skirts from Aliexpress no hassles.

Picked up a few small fish in that area, wrong timing... We were on our way back from the Billfish grounds 500-600m

OK, so now we have actually made some really nice fish catching lures. What you will find is the lures so far in this tutorial are perfect for what 90% of us are doing. We are fishing from small ski boats, most of which without outriggers. I wont go into why outriggers and and and but what we know is the lighter lures can be pulled a slower speeds 5-9 knots and they can be put a little further back while still having good action. They are also better suited to calmer conditions that most of us only fish in due to the size of our boats.

I am going to discuss 2 different weights now.

The first is what most of us are custom to. Simply making the lure heavier to suit rough conditions and also faster pulling speeds. It is also best suited to symmetrical lure shapes like conas, pushers and bullets. It basically entails making the insert from lead and it is simple to do. On a personal note though, I think weighting lures are over rated. You end up pulling lures too close to the transom where fish struggle to find them or running to fast. Some of the best lures in the world are completely un weighted. For example, lets consider Marlin Mags 10 top lures of all time. In that list we have the Mould craft super chugger and the Pakula Lumo sprocket, both unweighted. In fact the sprocket actually has buoyancy. We all know the Ilanders and Bobby Browns are deadly - also unweighted. This is because they are extremely versatile lures. Calm condition, close in and when the sea picks up, you can put them further out.

Below is a pic of both plugs we will be using to make the moulds for the weights. In the start of this tutorial we discussed making the inserts from urethane. We are basically going to use the same insert as our plug. The second smaller one in the pic is basically the same insert cut down to leave a half round for locating and gluing it to the plastic tube.

See from post #46

I made the moulds the same way I made the head moulds. The only difference is I use mould max 60 for the mould.

You can also use the method described in this tutorial: http://sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=86739&forum_id=78

Here is the other one. Fairly self explanatory but this is what I use in slant heads. It gets glued onto the tube before casting the PU insert over it.

On Friday ahead of the weekends fishing, I felt that I didn't have a nice china lure. We were going to do some light tackle fishing and I like to make sure we get literally anything to prevent the kids from getting bored. I needed one more lure in my arsenal so I designed this little guy.

The idea was to make a lure with a small slened profile but with a bit of weight so it doesnt get blown around to easily.

It weighs 23 grams (head only).
The head is 17mm diameter X 20mm long
Overall length is 140mm

The head has a lead insert.

We also lost this lure. On it's first outing it got hammered. The fish ran and pealed 150m of string with no stopping at all before the line parted... dammit.

I might have the strike on video, I hope so any way. Need to cheek the footage.

This is the 10" marble plunger on it's first outing.

Unfortunately it got lost due to the line parting.

The first half of the video is in very clear open ocean so you can see it's action and bubble trail. The lure swims incredibly well. The second part shows it being it being harassed and eventually taken by a Tuna.

Eyes... I use 2 methods. The first is very simple to do and really just consists of vinyl cut outs. You could try cut these out with a jig and a pair of scissors but the best way is to just ask any sign writer to cut some circles for you. Wont charge you much and if you dont come right, I'll gladly help you.

These are the most common eyes used...

Nope, didn't make them
and
Nope.

I probably could make them. problem is you need a lot of material, spray guns and a curing oven. The process is to make what looks like a dolly. You dip it in Polyurethane and cure in an oven. Do it repeatedly while adding layers of paint or glitter until it reaches the correct thickness. This is unnecessary for us DIYers. Buy the skirts, they are cheap enough in my opinion.

Sorry.

The Bahama Birds are indeed made of Perspex sandwiching Opal Perspex with a mirror finish These birds work really good creating lots of noise and splashes with the most flash I have seen on a bird to date

Thanks Bennie I am really happy with how it turned out. Hopefully it performs even beter

Andre they will definitely be swimming at Sodwana end of this month.

My Problem is being stuck up here cant really test them properly.

Ill be willing to send down a few if someone would be willing to test them in exchange for the bird would just want an honest review and suggestions

What a day on the water! Windfinder got it all wrong again, but the fishing made up for it. Was really nice to get a new flavour on the boat, and I sure did not know the rainbow runners got so big... always thought of them as "bait"size fish. The fight is quite interesting... big initial run, then it comes in, almost too easy, and the next moment it feels like you are getting taxed with big headshakes and strong resistance.

Although that saily didn't stick properly and came off way to soon, we were treated to a brilliant show of baitfish scattering in all directions to get away from the saily, and with the clean water we could observe how the saily used its whole body and sail to ball up the baifish.... it cannot be described in words!

There were loads of garrfish around but despite my best efforts and multiple knocks on light spinning gear, I could not get one of them to stick! Next time I will have a something special specifically for them!

Thanks again for another awesome trip Bennie, and congrats on how well your own lures are working... I actually believe that our catch rate went up since we started pulling home made lures exclusively!

When making a lure head, the resin head only has effect on the swimming action of the lure. The insert is the only part of the lure visible under water. The light refraction properties of resin is pretty much the same as water. That means the important aspect of profile is lost and only the insert is viewable in 2D. Try it. Put a lure under water and see how different it looks. Adding a tint to the resin increases profile of the lure head.

Standard Resin with various fillers work well. You can even colour the resin with 2K paint. Maybe other paints too but I only use 2k. The colour I use for the marble heads is a pearl white.

Great Bennie. Hope you remember to show us a tutorial how you rig the cona with steel wire for single hook setup. This will greatly be appreciated. I lost a very big wahoo 2 weeks ago as the cona was not rigged with steel. Just out of interest: Do you rig all your conas, even the smaller ones with steel wire? not sure if this affects the action of the cona especially the smaller "non marlyn" ones. If rigged, must hook face up or down. Thanks

I rig everything I can with steel except the really small little guys. If I could I would though.

We have gone full circle back to having a loose rig so that the hook set can turn into its best position and the lure can do it's own thing without interfering with each other. I will post something later.

Hi Bennie.
i Know I'm a few months behind on the post.
Thanks for the awesome tut on how to make lures. Always watched youtube videos but never seen how to make it in South Africa. you should post some videos on the tube.LOL.
Would love you chat to you in person, if you ever visit LUCKYS MANABA give me shout.
1) How do you colour the lure head with a colour on the top?
2) I see one of your lure pics has a "hook lock", how to make?
3) What type of colorant can be used? can normal colorant from a craft shop work?
cheers

1 - Lay the lure mould on its side and pour some coloured resin in. Once it cures, stand it up and fill with clear or second colour.

2- I mould hook locks. Made my own moulds with mold max 30 then I use industrial PU to cast them. If you drive past, I'll give you some.

3 - You can actually use ordinary 2k paint mixed into resin for colour.

4 - You can use MM without vaccuuming it.

5 - Call AMT Composites in Pinetown. 031 705 2034

Any reason why the heads are made in PU and not silicone? I see some suppliers make soft heads, are these silicon based?

I make the heads from clear polyester resin not Polyurethane. If you have a degassing and/or pressure chamber you can get the clear soft PU from AMT. Very expensive and i dont believe youll catch more fish with a soft head. Its a gimmick. All the top lures in the world besides moldcraft are hard heads.

Dan good question. Seems we had a rogue mod maybe. We lost a lot of tuts.
