What a weird season we are having so far. The big Shad never materialised in September and only now seem to be coming on the bite. The spring storms that we normally have at the end of August and September didn’t really happen either so it is anybody’s guess as to what is going to happen in the next month or two. Been a couple of Cape Yellowtail around, reports from divers and one of the local chaps spinning at Tongaat got one off the beach. Still quite a few big Blacks and big Greys around, but become very fussy about the size of baits, only eating the big stuff.
Off-shore the conditions seem to change in a flash. One day Flying Fish, Dorado, the odd Wahoo, the next day stone dead, not even a showing on the finder. The bait fish have also been very scarce with a few Red-Eyes and Sardines jumping on the jigs.
From a tackle point of view quite a few exciting things happening with a new range of Pulsator and Black Bart lures for the Bill-fishermen. We are also doing excellent deals on Penn Internationals and Shimano Tiagra reels and combos. Also new from Shimano are their latest jigging range of rods, the Yasei, a new 7’ Trevalla and four amazing Kaibutsu popping rods. Okuma’s new Cedros lever drag reel has to be one of the best buys in its category -definitely worth a look at.
Halco’s new Skim-Stick looks like an exciting lure. People are being told that it is a trolling lure which is not entirely true because it casts well, especially on an Assassin Spinmaster Shoregame and can Walk-the-Dog and do some other amazing tricks which I am sure are going to entice more than just a GT. What I can’t wait for are the big sinking Salmo Sliders which are definitely going to prove to be a deadly sinking stick-bait. They also cast very well. For the Rock and Surf guys, the Super-Slims from Blue Marlin have been quite popular and the Berkley Whiplash backing braid is back in bright orange.
With the ever increasing popularity of specimen carp fishing and freshwater fishing in general, we have put in a whole new range of Carp baits, dips and equipment. The very popular Salmo Hornets which are being used a lot at Sterkfontein as well as the Natal rivers for Scaleys and Yellows in the Vaal and Orange are now back in stock. Our “beat the evening chill” multi-branded, lined jackets make excellent gifts and are a must for any serious angler. The full range of Assassin branded apparel is also now in stock. There are hats, beanies, multi-function protective face and neck guards, quick dry shirts, shorts and track-pants, rash vests and tights and a waterproof rain jacket. Till we talk again, have some awesome fishing!!!!!
