Hell reading these posts make me feel nostalgic - I started fishing freshwater artlure seriously in the late 70's and participated in the 1984 Artlure SA's hosted by OFS and naturally held at Bloemhof - the main species targeted were Carp by dipping fo them with a fly rod using "black taddy flies" , for Barbel by "klopping" and presenting large black feather leadhead jigs and flipping Heddon Pumkin Seed" lures at any surface activity ... all in all we had much success and many sceptic were converted to these techniques.   Have just realised that was all of 25 years ago, my son and I will be back at Bloemhof at the end of this month along with some of my LTB mates to give the Barbel some stick.

Here's a colour chart of the original pumkin seed lures (now very collectable in the States)

there are alot of methods to catching barbel. . . all barbel in all dams instincts are the same. . .they eat anything they can get there fins on. . . . .

Methods I use During leagues and competitions:

First you could try loading your hook with alot of worms(as a barber is sensative and as much worms sets of more vibration) and get yourself red flourescent powder and shake the worms through the powder. . .

or

try fish head. . . take a whole fish the size of your hand cut the head of in a way that most of the guts stay behind. . .hook one hook through the top of the head and one through the bottem lip so that your chances of catching it is higher

or

crab baits are just as effective or chicken hearts. . .

if you don't come Right then who knows??

Ey! Yesterday was a very sad day for me indeed... I got snagged twice and lost my last two sliders!!!!! Anyway, today I had to trek up to the big city (jhb has serious traffic issues man!) and I ended up in Mias looking to get a handful of new recruits but NO SLIDERS AVAILABLE!!! Damn. So I bought 3 of the slow sinking Triton Pumpkin seeds. Has any body had success with them? I will try load a pic of them quick..
Shot for all the advice above!
