Diver and shark

The South Australian tuna diver has told how he volunteered to jump into a tuna pen to try to kill the injured shark. "Somebody had to do it, no one else was too keen, so I went in," Mr Stefanek, 38, said. The struggle took place recently at a tuna farm off the coast of Mexico and the tale of the Aussie who "wrestled" the fearsome fish has spread.

Mr Stefanek, who returned to Port Lincoln this month after a six-month contract working on Mexican tuna farms, played down his feat.
"It was one of those things that just happened," he said. "The shark had got in by biting its way through the bottom of the net after detecting a couple of dead fish. "There was just no way we could get it out, so the decision to kill it was made and some blokes shot it ? but no way it would die.
"It started to get messy and I jumped into the water and swam outside the net so I could shoot it with a power head (spear-fitted with a shotgun cartridge)." The white pointer became enraged and began thrashing around the 45m tuna net. "Someone had to go in," Mr Stefanek said. "I was the most experienced diver there and no one else was too keen, so I went inside the net.
"The shark saw me and went berserk. I tried to kill it quickly and fired at its head, which only stunned it. "I fired eight more times and it kept coming back and thrashing. I think it was then that I started to get a bit scared.
"Another diver could see I was in trouble and came inside the net ? we figured we were not going to kill it and I thought we'll have to drag it out." Mr Stefanek surfaced and called for a rope and pulley and dived again to tie a rope around the shark's tail.
While the fish was distracted with another diver, Mr Stefanek looped and knotted its tail and signalled to start winching.
"It was after I looked at it on the boat I realised it was huge," he said. "No one there had ever seen a shark so big and there were a few stunned and amazed looks.
"The great pity was it had to be killed ? particularly as it was wounded. "I know they (great whites) are becoming extinct. But there is only one of me and it could have made me extinct very quickly."

These Tuna farms are big money, the owners will have killed the GW by any means anyway (they had already shot it before the diver got in to finish the job). The divers are normally there to help fix the net and general underwater repairs etc. So I don't believe the blame for killing the shark lies with the diver.

I don't however agree with the posed trophy photograph.

Anybody know if the GW is protected in Mexico ? As far as I know there is a healthy population of them there.

This is an old story, they did try and lure the shark out of the net back through the whole in which it came in. in the end it had to be killed, do you know how much a shark like that eats a day, alot, lots of tuna was being lost, and if you talking rands its like 5/6 grand a fish!!! how many of those did that shark kill!!

you can't justify it that way JB, in the same way it is wrong to kill a lion or leapard who kills livestock, killing the hunter is not the solution or justifying it for profit. remember we invaded there hunting ground. everyday business make losses and will be quick to tell you how much they lost, but will never ever tell you what the profits are.

well thats the way i see it. loose a couple of hundred grand or kill the shark thats doing it!!!! eeeerrrrmmm id kill the shark!!

i dont think hes posing because hes particularly proud of what hes done....he did what he needed to...but yes i do disagree with killing lions who eat livestock and any other animal in the same situation...they were all here first....

The shark was stuck in a net (or farm), it wasn't killed, it was put down. It's not about posing with a trophy, it's to show how big the shark really was.

Once it's in the farm it's very very difficult to guide the GW out, and anyway, I won't get in there to guide the GW out. I know Jaws was just a movie, but it's a movie I watched ... more than once.

Remember that by breeding and harvesting fish less pressure is put on the free swimming fish, when you have a cage with something in it in the sea something that you don't want in there is bound to end up in there, and then "action" has to be taken.

The shark was making k@k, what were they supposed to do, let it kill everything, they tried other options, and it didn't work, this was a last resort. i mean that oke got in the with that moerse shark, would you do it, i wouldn't!! he risked his life!! if a leopard or a lion is killing livestock, if you can't catch it and stop it some other way and you are loosing money, a last resort would be to kill it. i am not for killing sharks or lions leopards etc. but if it has to be done it has to be done.

Money is money, if you are a businessman and you are fed up with loosing so much money, you have to look after yourself and your in vestors, and sometimes a k@k descision has to be made.

correction, the shark did not make kak, he did what sharks do!

they had to kill it because it was injured. Pull the shark out of the nets and let nature take its course. but no they had to kill it and justify it by 'oh it was injured', and now they got bragging rights. to shoot it in the first place, was the the correct course of action?........think not!

you should be in business to make money.point. I think we know that.

Listen guys, don't want to get involved in a argument here, but just a serious question...

How the hell do you pull a GW of that size out the nets ? ( I think it was injured because they injured it in the first place) that's not some small baby sharks

Getting into the water with it ... NORA, not 4 me thank you

I don't trust sharks, ESPECIALLY GW's, Tigers and Bulls, will NEVA go in the water with them
