Verbeel ek my of is die kwaliteit nie meer so goed nie?

Ek sukkel om n ordentlike mieliebom te maak wat styf genoeg is om ver te cast.

Wat die beste werk vir my is maar die goeie ou gekookte mielies met bietjie suiker wat gemaal word in meuletjie. :SSS

Bind baie lekker

I have also noticed that the consistency of Super Cast feed varies from time to time. Generally what happens is that when the bags of feed are transported the vibration will cause the binder within the mix to settle at the bottom of the bag. I suggest that when you get to the water just take the bag and shake it a bit to mix the binder back into the feed.

I personally have moved away from Super Cast feed and now use Willem Petri feed which I find is very user friendly, binds excellently, always smells nice and fresh and has a good ratio of fine and coarse mielies in it. It breaks up easily too even when mixed quite dry.

Hi, the quality of Super Cast has dropped recently and I believe this to be with them believing they have the market cornered. I have switched to Boulyn and have had good results, it even smells fresh.

Most of the "Popcorn" Type feeds are derived from one of 3 manufactuerers and all use the same process. This basis is then used as a base to the Groundfeed and each Fishing Brand adds their own "Secret mix of ingredients"

You can as not mix feed 100% to the same recipe every single time ie it is never 3 measures of feed to one measure water.

I use Champion feed, MG Bokke Voer, Boulyn, Super Cast Kolletjie, Super Cast standard and mix them together even and in the past 20 years never had one that will not bind or work.

The trick with all of these extruded yellow maize feeds is to:

1. Mix less than you are going to use.

2. Completely saturate the feed. When you add water if you squeeze a handful all the feed must ooze out between your fingers.

3. Let the feed absorb water and stand for a while. It will now be to soft to use for a hard cast.

4. Scratch up the surface with your fingers 7-10cm deep and sprinkle a double handful of dry feed into it (less is better because once in you can't take it out)

5. Form your feedball and cast away.

I am now for the 20th year in a row in my Province's A side and have coached Penkoppe and Juniors for the past 7 years and we use this method and even 8 year old's make a useable feedball that breaks up and creates a feedspot.

If you do not fully saturate the feed it will float away

If you saturate and then don't add dry feed to finalise the bind it will break up off the weight in the cast of the weight will cast through the weight through the feed ball.

I use this method with single brands or mixes of brands ie half Boulyn and Half Super Cast and will even then add 25% fine Chic-Chic to make a denser feedball that will leave more feed on the bottom when the ball breaks down

Thx for the input E! :fishn

The problem starts when your local tackle shop only stock Super cast.
The fishing shop in Garsfontein and a place in Silverton stocks a no name brand which binds excellent(and you dont have to "shake" it). What is their secret?

When I mix/prepare my bom, I usually add handfuls of water to the dry feed little by little, rubbing it between my hands to moisten it, until I've reached the right consistency, which for me should be a bit dry rather than too moist. When I shape my bom, I will first wet my hands and feel out the bom when it's on the spring/weight. If it's too dry, I will just wet my hands again and 'plaster' it on the outside, till it's solid. This always works for me, I hardly ever throw the feed off, and when I did, it was coz somebody else prepared it. So in essence, I dont really pay attention to the ratios, 1:3 and so on, I feel it out and rub the scoop of dry mix until it feels right.

One of my local Fishing Shops was big on Super Cast until people started to complain. He now only keeps one stack of Super Cast and the rest of the shelf is full of Boulyn.

I personally have not really had a problem with the binding of Super Cast but with the freshness, some of it just smells old. Boulyn smells very "popcorny", time will tell whether they maintain this standard or not.

Boulyn (retail outlet) is adjacent to our premises. They are in the food industry and currently ship a meagre fraction of what SuperCast has top ship.

Consider this if Supercast purchases base of 40 tons on a t a time to package and ship, how long till your bag get's out.

One problem is also some shops buy 1 ton + at a time for better purchase price and to make sure you as angler always have stock on the shelves. If it takes 6 months to sell from the shop then you can't point a finger at Super Cast.

Luckily SuperCast/Boulyn or Champion has never let me down and they always catch fish, it's not what feed you use it's feed placed in the path of fish that catches fish.

Yes that makes sense....you cant point a finger if that is the case.

But in the end the guy on the bank doesn't know the history of the product. They should then maybe think of adding a sell by date to the bag.

I buy 40kg and use it over a set time. Believe me it works even if it is a year old.

Fishing is confidence and yes if you're not confident in the feed you won't believe you can catch on it so you won't fish it confidently and your catch rates will drop, for sure

Hiya Craig

When you mention completely saturate the feed, would you for example take 2 cups supercast + 2 cups boulyn and add say for example 4 cups water? (as the packets read x2 cups feed and x1 cup water) then let the feed soak up and only then add further dry feed say after 20minutes or so?

(i usually make my feed at home the morning of the comp so will add the dry feed once i get to the venue)

I also mix my supercast and boulyn 50/50

Hi Martin those are a rough guideline and will work 90% of the time. Texture and feel is the only way tog et it to bind 100% every time.

Rather make it to moist if you make it before heading off to the dam and then add some dry to get 100% consistency

Come see how I do it on Saturday at the Nyl

Thanks a mil Craig

Wont be making it this weekend to Nyl bw_l_) i kind of forgot about another commitment i had for Saturday night and got firmly reminded about it from the wife lady during last week, have let Dean know and have someone else taking my place, x2 new people who have just started fishing for our club are going to be going to nyl, so will get some feedback from them and hit the next one

(will be in contact with Dean to see what the availability is for the next Nyl social) like we discussed, i need to get to this venue before Trials for Limpopo this year. at least somehow iv managed to get to day comp for Saturday so will definitely try and experiment with the bomb as iv also had some weird experiences with supercast hence the reason im mixing my bomb 50/50 now

We'll have all 37 swims for the next 2 comps and will open it for the Forum once the club is accommodated

All the anglers who withdrew were replaced within 4 hours

The Protea and Federation feeder teams are joining us for the session.

I got 8 juniors and 6 penkoppe and 4 of their parents for coaching this weekend so I am fishing double 20mm boilies for the 4 x 40lbs+ fish in the dam.

That sounds like a man with a plan.
