Hi

Anyone know of spots around cpt where snoek (the west coast version) can be caught from the side? Or maybe I should ask what the chances are of something like that happening?

Regards

Hi Duckbill

I have seen it at Rooikrans many years ago.
Schoeman in his book "Strike" describes catching from the side quite a bit.

I have caught at Rooikrans. When the Snoek boats are congregated in Buffelsbay, it is always good to allow yellowtail spinners to drop deeper intermittently, and a jerky retrieve action applied.

its very common to catch them from the side in NZ, they regard them as a pest there and only target them for bait or if they are desperate

to quote NZ surfcasting's facebook post (they call em barracouta)

"Baracuta are mongrels at biting through mono trace, for the most part they prefer the colder water, however can be caught year round. Some people eat them, but they are chocka with worms so its not ideal. The best thing about a baracuta, is they make an excellent burley and a fantastic snapper bait "

O heck no! I trust a snoeksmous as much as I trust "the brigade". You know, the ones who stuff their waders with undersize kobbies from the treknets in Muizenberg...

It happens quite often in the new harbour at Hermanus. These are china snoek. Very young fish
You beat me to it lol. They're great fun on light spinning tackle - although the seals in the harbour claim their fair share as well.

Hermanus' new harbour sounds like a good place to try. I'm way too much of a hoender to fish the mountain.
