If not using circles you have to reel fast to collect the slack and stretch in the line and then hit the fish with short and hard strike (This on the rocks)

When on the beach walk backward to pick up the slack and stretch while striking.

Keeping the bow in the line to a minimum helps to detect bites and improve the strike.

Walk your line out 100m, leave a bow in the line and the hold the hook between your fingers and get a buddy to just strike.

This way the hook won't even budge, now keep the line taught and let him walk back while striking and feel the difference. (Using this method \rather hold onto a sinker as the effect is much better and you might hook yourself)
