Great stuff, you have me interested, what rod and reel would you recommend with say 20lb braid?

Hi Steve thanks. I use a shimano clarus medium heavy jig and worm rod which is 7 feet long with a Shimano Curado E700 low profile baitcaster 7:1 retrieve speed. I love this setup and have caught up to 12kg cats with it. But I recommend a hevaier setup if you want to catch bigger cats as a 10kg barbel pulls the hell out of this rod. I use 65lb Jerry Brown braid on my setup. The Sensation Pro Elite Heavy action rods looks like a good choice as they are very strong rods. Reels I would stich with Shimano, but I'm a huge fan of their reels. You just need a decent drag on it and a fast retrieving speed. I don't recommend using 20lb braid as you will lose a big fish. We started of using 14lb mono way back when I was a kid and kept on upgrading on our line strength until we stopped losing fish due to line snapping. My recommendation of 40lb minimum is there for a reason. Hope my advice helps:fishn

Steve remember that a lot of the barbel are caught in VERY shallow water, usually around sharp rocky ledges and tree stumps

I use 14lb fireline (actual breaking strength around 40lb) and a long 0.75mm hard nylon leader. I've been cut off on 50lb braid before I knew what was happening, so in shallow water I would go as heavy as possible...

If they are turning in the open then I sometimes go right down to my 4lb rig, but generally not under 8lb fireline (20lb) on a mh setup...

The Owner has probably caught more barbel on artlure than most guys on this forum combined, his advice will keep you on track, if you stick to it

Hi Steve, it depends on the dam/river. I have caught barbel on pumkin seeds through out the winter, but they are usually structure bound like next to trees or rocks and not in the open water. At other venues like Roodekopjes and Roodeplaat the barbel sunbath in the shallows as the water temperature rises in the afternoons. These barbel are very skittish and prefer lures that are dropped on there whiskers to trigger a reaction strike, but your lure must not enter the water close to them as the noise will cause them to spook. I suspect that northern based venues will have more success with Lume's in the winter, than southern based venues.

Ok, I got 4 mad pumpkins,a 7ft Sensation pro medium heavy, a Shimano Sahara 400FE, could only get Sufix 30lb braid, no Jerry Brown. Will work the shallows tomorrow afternoon.

Joshua I would stick with the trebles hey.. sometimes the barbel spit the lure out as fast as the suck it in, and the trebles just increase the chances of hooking up... I generally also prefer singles, but for barbel I think trebles are definitely better on a large bodied lure

Fishing was difficult Saterday, Splash and I only got 3 barbel before the wind blew us of the dam. I got one on Lume casting next to a tree, Splash caught one on the same method. Later I caught another one that was sunbathing on a carp leadhead on my carp casting rod. Still lekker to get out from behind the books:fishn
