I'm here, lol. Although I'm in Pretoorsdorp I did stay in Capetown for 14 years and know where the barbel spots are.

Here follows:
Voelvlei dam - just outside Malmesbury. Contact Urs 021 4245613 / 083 541 4143
Kwaggaskloof dam -(Area Manager) Carol Davids 023-3408000 / 023-3404150 of Mnr Rooms 023-3408000 (uitbreiding 8112)
De Drinken - Morreesburg. Contact Henrietta Bester 022-4332597 / 082 894 8512
Palmiet Valley Dam - Wellington (private venue). Contact Ivan Harris 021-8643317
Magic Forrest - Durbanville. Fish the top dam for the bigger Cats.
Sonstraal
Vygeboom
Doordekraal
Liesbeeck river.
Breede river
and this one: take the Constantia/Hout Bay off-ramp on the M3. If coming from Cape Town then it is easy once you've taken the offramp - just before you reach the stop street T-junction with Old Constantia Main road there is an open field on your left that is part of the clover-leaf off-ramp - it has a few large trees and and is open - it was a site camp for the roadworks and sewer upgrade - pull in, park in the open and walk towards the bridge (the M3 going overhead) - you will notice what looks like a driveway going down to the trees - walk down there and cross the shallow drif thru the stream - you will now notice a beautiful tree-lined pond - quite bi and very deep - its about 3m deep 15-20 meters in and almost 2m deep right in front so be careful! There are numerous gaps in the trees where you can fish from.

Your best bet for big Cats would be:
1) Breede river. Have a look at this link http://www.sealine.co.za/view_topic.php?id=52752&forum_id=64&highlight=oh+snap
2) Voelvlei - if you can get in.
3) Palmiet Valley

Hi Skuimkop.........Just shows how the English language can be misinterpreted. I even tried Google Earth for a location ::S::S::S

I mean if nobbles had said "Kwaggaskloof will have some great spots for you" I would have known exactly where to look::S::S::S

Anyway thanks for the info and I will give the venues you recommend a go.

Ja nee kyk Afrikaans het darem nie daai probleem nie want hy vat dooie rus, hehehe

Just teasing, lol. You can also try Hillcrest near Durbunville Hills. But as you might have picked up from my replies I would strongly consider targeting the Breede if I were you. The fact that I didn't target the Breede more intensively before I left was one of my big regrets before I left the Cape.

Also try and get private venues in the Malmesbury area cause it seems like those waters hold the bigger Cats. Maybe because barbel were introduced there earlier than other areas or the fact that they aren't targeted as much there. I don't now why but this is what I picked up while I was staying there. That is why Voelvlei is such a good venue for barbel.

Guys you can correspond with here on Sealine there from the Cape which might be able to assist you as well is burgalmighty, Carp addict, braailegend, Gt40, Zane, TOE 007, Tackle Slut and wetfrog. Each has got knowledge of different venues and I'm sure they will assist you as they can gain from you too.

burgalmighty - Hillcrest & Durbanville venues.
Carp Addict - Palmiet Valley and verious others.
braailegend - Durbanville venues
Gt40 - Malmesbury, Mis verstand (which I also forgot to mention, sorry) and various venues all over Cape Town
Zane - Voelvlei with Artlure
Toe 007 - Voelvlei and Kwaggaskloof (if I remember correctly)
Tackle Slut - Magic Forrest and others
wetfrog - Voelvlei

Hi Skuimkop & co.

The lower Berg river has really good cats.  I have not personally fished there but have received good reports from reputable anglers.  Would like to take my Ark canoe and do some exploring some time. Riaan let me know when you are in Slaapstad again next summer, maybe we can make a recon. Any additional intel on Lower Berg will be appreciated.

Voelvlei is a good venue for artlure, however the barble are stunted due to a massive overpopulation of this species.  The barble congregate against the dam wall.  It's best fished early morning as the sun rises.  Had lots of success casting Lume lures at rising cats at the wall.  I would suggest that you remove trebles from the Lume pumkinseeds and rather replace with a large circle hook rigged assist hook style.  Much safer! Watch out when wading at the wall as the large rocks are unstable and there are lots of dangerous snakes such as cobras and puffadders at this venue.

Theewaterskloof also has medium sized cats, but must be targeted at night with bait.  It's quite interesting that we are now having great success catching carp on lure at night at Theewaterskloof.  The reason is that the carp are hunting gill cristella at night which has made them very susceptible to flies and loodkop.

You can contact Franswa Claasen from Bonnievale for additional artlure info on Misverstand dam and the Breede river.  He is a knowledgeable angler and a nice guy who is prepared to share his knowledge
