My BG60 havent given me any problems till date, got 0.40 awa-shima line on it, takes 300meters, and I have no problem with any size barbel, Its a tuff reel also used it at see, they go for about R700 - R800. U only want to buy once.... and that would be my choice.

Hi HennieB

Vat so 300m/40lb braid.

Hi HennieB,

Hi,

Ons was verlede naweek by Nonyana Lodge.

Ek kon darem 2 kry maar hulle was klein so 4-5kg max.

Hello,
I use the Penn Slammer 760 for European Catfish
(I am from Germany and stay sometimes in SA)

Those reels are realy reliable and handle our catfish pretty good, so no worries for you with that reel.

As mainline I use .40 Suffix braid with 100mtr high abrasive 0.60 mono.

For tracer I can really recommend brick laying cord, but it must be BRAID and made from nylon!
1mm diameter is perfect. that brick laying cord is cheap and high abrasive, so you dont have to buy that fancy kevlar tracing line or what ever.

Dont use steel tracers, we know that catfish are high sensitive to metal and dont like it, mostly the get spooked aways when they attach steel tracers

Those Van Staal's are the AK-47 of grinders. The only problem is if you're a leftie like me, you can't find right handed reels and the handle can't be taken out to swap sides. A couple of years back I was in the US and looked all over to find a right handed reel, but to no avail.

Eeeehr, Van Staals. OK thats a pricerange out of the space!
but actually you can very easy change the left or right hand use on the most grinder reels.

just unscrew the handle and place it on the other side
I can do that with my Penns

another good reel is the penn sargus series. complete saltwater proof and not that expensive

Not the case with Van Staal though...unless they've changed it in the last 8 or so years, but I doubt it. The whole reel is built not to allow any water, sand or other muck in, so there's very few parts that can be removed.

I was told they used to make right hand wind reels in the past, but they discontinued it. A real shame, I would love to own one.

I'm very happy with the 2 Shimano Aerlex reels I bought,I also use them for spodding when carp fishing and they can take some punishment.
