What's Your biggest Cat caught on Platties

Hey guys, now i know first hand how well a live plattie works and it got me thinking as the plattie with a body of a R2 coin produced a cat of 5kg's, and we all agree that bigger bait equals bigger fish, so what i would like to know is, What is the biggest cat you have caught on a plattie , Dead or alive, and what size was the Plattie(body size excluding legs)

I think the results should be quite interesting......

Now that's what I'm talking about, when you say two different hooks, do you mean like your live bait rig or two hooks on a 3-way swivel? Very nice catch though, congrat's.

Myne was a live Plattie (about the size of a tennis ball) used on a hair rig. Caught a 21.3kg Cat in the Komati river.

Sliding sinker on mailine then 3way swivel with two hook snoots. 1 of 30cm and 1 of 45cm. More vibration = better pickup rate.

Nice, but how on earth did you hair rig a live plattie and where did you find one with such a huge body?

Through one of the hind legs. Gives the rig much more life and a great pickup and hook rate.
I use to 'farm' with platties when I lived in Komatipoort. Would pick a couple of them out and feed them mince, those grew a lot faster and a lot bigger then the others. Plus most of the stuff in the lowveld just grow a lot bigger then most other places in SA.

Ok, so bigger baits = bigger fish, my PB of 18kg was caught on a live cricket at midnight with a full moon, I was alone at the time, played it on light line for what seemed to be forever, eventually managed to grab hold of it and dragged it out. The key was that I had about 600m+ line on my reel, there were no structures that could snag my line, I let it run when ever it wanted to and just gently guided it in. I was using an Orlando centre pin reel which I love because you actually can feel the fish's power, everything just went my way with this fish. I have lost smaller fish than this that just took off and never looked back. As far as platties are concerned I have caught small ones on big platties and good sized fish on small platties.

I am originally from Nelspruit and have fished the Komati a lot but never really for cats...TIGERS! Anyway, platties do get enormous!!! Seen some a few years back at Mac Mac pools and the body was bigger than the size of my hand! Might sound like im exagerating here but kid you not!

Where can one get platties in the Benoni area??

I had a meeting with a client at Birchwood conference centre in December, in the same road there is a plot that advertised Platties on a board outside the property. I gave my client a lift back to the airport so couldnt stop and verify whether it was legit or not.

The best directions I can give you...turn into Trichardt road (News Cafe and Western Accesories will be on your right) , 1st road left into View Point road -there are a few plots on the right hand side of the road ,One had a big sign I think advertising animal feed etc , it also had a sign advertising Platties. It was probably a 100m or so from the corner of trichardt and view point.

If you do visit send me a PM with the details.

Its illegal in natal to use platties o i wont comment. But bigger bait will produce bigger fish, Steve one sure fire way to know your in a spot that wont hold a big fish is the presence of the shoal( fish between 3kg and 7kg). They seem to all stick together, think of it like this, would you like to spend your time in a room full of 50 toddlers or in front of your tv by yourself with no one bothering you. Same thing for cats. The big boys hate any noise and crowding in an area. If i find the shoal i move my spot immediately.

But well done on that 18kg, that is a one in a 1000 fish, the stuff our bar time fishing stories are made of, lol. Great fish

10.3kg`s on a medium plattie but have only fished with them three times or so and gave up because of all the babies (3-6kg) I caught with it.

I think with them, you are just lucky if a big boy gets to it first because almost any barbel above 1kg can get them in.
