Those close to me would know that 2012 has treated me extremely well on the fishing front and I’ve managed a couple of decent catches the few times I went fishing...

A couple of weeks ago I managed to land my new PB carp, a beautiful mirror of 13.43 kg after being stuck on  11.87kg for 5 years and then a slight improvement to  11.94kg a year ago. Low and behold on this same trip my son Vian betters his PB Carp from 8.71kg to a beautiful 10.19kg common.

This past weekend I witnessed another impressive PB, this time again by Vian, my son of 7 years old.

The mission was clear from the start. We’d target Koppies Dam and use big baits for those big cats. We planned everything meticulously but once again the weather would have the final say. My brother Dominique custom made a muti box for Vian, which I started filling for him at quite an expense. This would be the battle station from where the barbel baits would be collected. The first prize would be some muddies with small carp being the concellation prize. These would then be put out at different depths to try and lure in a big “snor”

I left the office at 16:00 on Friday 14 December and rushed home to Meyerton where Vian and his Mom had the clothes, bedding, sunscreen, mosquito repellent and food and snacks ready for this Father and Son trip. The rest was done the previous night and I basically hooked the trailer and off we went. My brother left for Koppies earlier that day to go and reserve a spot for us. On route I give him a call but am disappointed to hear that it is pouring with rain and that the lightning has prevented my “boet”  to even come close to his rods...Vian changed the CD in the car to a fishing compilation and we sing along the tunes of Sarah De Jagher, Se my toe,toe and also my old time favourite...”Vissermansvriend se Pa” which 9 out of 10 times let a tear roll down my cheek... must be my drive to also one day leave behind a legacy in my Son’s life. Our beautiful sport is the TOOL that can allow you to do so...so TAKE YOUR KIDS TO THE WATER AND GO CHASE THOSE MEMORIES- they last forever. Ok, back to business now...The traffic was an absolute nightmare on this Long Weekend with all the holiday makers on route...

At 18:55 I realised that the gate might close at 19:00. I ask my son to search the phone’s contact list for Koppiesdam and that we have to phone and enquire. My son was elated when the gate keeper said that the gate only closes at 21:00. So we relax for the remainder of our journey. My son asks a lot of questions about combinations he would like to try from his new muti box and I remind him that our mission is to catch a record Barbel of some sort to which he replied...”No bait...No Barbel...”

We arrived at the gate after slipping and sliding our way along the last couple of kilometres on the very wet dirt road in the rain. I fill in the papers and we head towards the spot my brother Dominique was waiting at. Vian sits in the car while I unpack in the rain, my initial priority being the Trailer Tent and setting my son’s bed for the night etc. A quick hotdog to fill the gap and Vian went to sleep. Dominique and I worked another hour or so to get everything perfect and after a glitch or two with his bait boat, we eventually manage to get all the baits out. The rain never really subsided and my Frog Toggs rain suit came in very handy. Barbel rods were initially set with some day old chickens which were purchased in a frozen form- not my first choice of bait on any day...but the mission had to start somewhere...I had my wireless receiver in my tent so I would not miss a beep of one of the barbel alarms. I slept with one eye open waiting for it to happen that Friday night, but it never happened.

Saturday morning 05:00 I wake up and notice how much the dam’s level had risen by. I wake up my brother and my son and we get to work with a lot of enthusiasm for what this day might hold. I notice that many anglers around us have actually started packing up and I assume it’s because of all the rain. Vian got started on the “Barbel baits” and quickly started filling the keep net with some bite size carp. Dominique on the other hand was on a mission to taste success on specimen angling for Carp at Koppies and beyond my belief managed a couple of decent carp during the day on his all time favourite bait...Green Peas on the hair – with a parti blend of particles in the PVA mesh. I was only interested in the catfish and started loading different varieties of carp on the catfish set ups. One rod got a carp head, the other a fillet and then one rod got a whole carp which was strategically severed to release those all important attractive oils. These were taken in with the bait boat to distances between 80 m and 250 m from the bank. The water temperature was measured at about 22 degrees and the depth fished between 1.5 and 1.9 m on the distances measured. I was surprised at how shallow the water was and would have preferred 3 meters at least...but we had to make it happen. I joined in the fun of tempo angling for the carp and challenged Vian. We only managed carp and tried everything to get a different species caught – no muddies and no yellows however.

At 11:55 the one barbel rod alarm goes crazy and the silence around that dam was broken. Vian and I both arrive at the rod in question at the same time. A quick scan by me confirms that it was the rod with the whole carp and therefore something big...I glance over to Vian and before I can ask him if he wants to take it, he jumps in front of me and picks up the Garrick custom rod built by Craig Neil and paired with the Shimano Ultegra 14000. The contact with the alarm wheel is broken but the barbel has still not stopped with its initial run. I explain to Vian to tighten up on the drag and reel down into the fish to set the 12/0 Eagle Claw circle. He does it perfectly and almost gets pulled from his feet with the direct braid set up – designed to go and target some Spotted Gulley sharks in Namibia next year.

Vian is full of jokes initially and enjoys the brute force being exerted by this fish on him and the powerful tackle. I knew the tackle would be up for the job but soon realised that Vian started to suffer. I tried to encourage him as much as I could but at some stage he wanted to give up as his back started aching and it was not as much fun as in the beginning...This is where I asked him a very important question in his very young angling career...Do you want out...and then you can’t claim the fish...or Do you want to hang in there...and the glory is yours..? With a tear running down his cheek he shouted: THIS FISH IS MINE...and he continued the fight...a proud moment for Dad, I must say.

From here on he controlled the fish and after about 25 minutes he had the barbel in the very shallow water about 15 metres from the bank. I explained to him that this is where hearts and lines normally get broken and he patiently coaxed the barbel into the landing net aided by Dominique who then took the photos.

The end result was a spectacular and very special catfish. It was milky white with pink on its fins – some sort of albino I’m sure. The fish was in a good condition and nice and fat. It only had one minor defect...one of its long whiskers was

missing...We weighed it in a Carp weigh bag and the result...15.2kg :wfish

We all immediately knew that this would smash his previous PB of 11.5kg. Vian could not believe what he had just accomplished...this creature was actually taller than him- a tall boy for a 7 year old. Strangely enough this specimen also gave new meaning to the term “Sharptooth Catfish” and I’m convinced it had longer and sharper teeth than any other big barbel I’ve handled before, and I made sure it doesn’t suddenly start swinging on my thumb and shred my hand to pieces...It was time to capture these memories on my camera after a decent round of “high fives” all round. It is then when sanity suddenly kicked in and Vian realised he was still in his pyjamas...I told him that there was no time to go change now and seeing that he landed the fish in his “jamies” he would also pose in his “jamies” 12:00 or not...

Vian released this beauty back to fight another day and got splashed good when the barbel tasted its freedom in the shallows. We ended up catching many more carp, a couple of smallmouth yellows and one tiny barbel (about 4 kg) but it’s the Barbel in Pyjamas that will stay fresh in my memories for many years to come.
