02 July 2012 - 09:20 By Shaun Ryan Reports have come through from the South Coast that the first shoals of sardines for the season have just been netted. The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board's Mike Anderson-Reade says a net of about 400 baskets was pulled ashore this morning at Hibberdene. The haul is quite large for the beginning of the run - and will hopefully spark the start of a bumper season. Anderson-Reade says there have also been reports of sardines at Margate main beach and Pumula. He says officials will take a flight down the coast to pin-point exactly where the fish are. "It's a little bit late, I think we've become accustomed to having the fish on our coast in the first couple of weeks of June so it is a little bit late but at least they are here now and I am sure people will enjoy all the sites and spectacles that go with it," he said.
