What baits will work best in september??
All most any bait will work in September. From boiled egg to cricets, roaches, grasshoppers and snails right thru to Platties, day old chickens and fish heads/fillets. Let me explain. The cats will go on the feed after the winter months and must fatten up fast to gather there strenght/stamina for the spawn season (they do not feed actively during this time) that folllows shortly after the end of winter. The cats therefor feed on anything they can get hold of and they do so very greedily and even sometimes aggresively. After the spawn period they get much more picky of what they feed on and here is were Cheetha rightly said that you must try to find out what they feed on, on the day. I always try to take all the possible baits to the water and then start to eliminate baits that don't work on the day. This been said I always put one rod out with either a fish head or fillet and experiment with the other rods at different dephts, distances and locations/structures.

Hallo welcome to sealine!
Chicken livers will work but chicken hearts work better for casting as it stays longer on the hook what you maybe also can try is sardines the rock and surf guys use I heard some guys had success with that in freshwater.

A few chicken hearts and gizzards from PnP put on a 8/0 circle work great at the Vaal River.

I normally put 4 or 5 on...

Otherwise try and get hold of Day Old Chickens(they are dead)...these remain one of the deadliest baits for cats

Sardine will work, but like skuim said it depends in a few factors. I ctach ctas on sard just after winter. The amount of scent coming off it is huge. But as they get picky sard will get less and less effective. I would start with baby chickens, but take off the head feet and legs, wings to. Than skin it. I have recorede better strike rates by doing this over leaveing them intacy. It must be the extra scent and more concentrated scent coiming off a skinned one. I agree with skuim, use a head or fillet as a standard bait.

If you are going to use the livers or heart find out how much fishing pressure the water is under. If it is alot than the fish would have seen more hearts and liver than you could poke a stick at. Than you need to think out side the box and go for the un-conventional.

well i'm actually going to try catching barbel at Rust in Orbi.. Which is a very busy place almost every weekend but most of the guys there go for carp.. I knows ders some decent barbels der cos i caught a few.. And its always fun to pull in a barbel when the carp are actin fussy. Do you think chumming the water is a good idea? Was thinkin bout cutting up maybe two whole sards and throwing them around my spot.. I doubt these fish have ever seen a sard head before, maybe a few freebies will encourage them to take it next time i'm down there too

I would always recommend that people try new stuff so ja go for it. Just remember that you have to use BIG baits if you want to catch that monster when you are going to chum you area as the chum will most certainly lure the small ones closer. By using a BIG bait you narrow it down that the small ones will pic up your bait. Different story tho if you want to target the small Cats on light tackle.

a 1kg karp or grass carp head

That and even bigger (1,5kg - 2 kg) but then you must know what size Cat you can find in that peace of water because it won't help if you put that big baits out and there is no Cat that can pick it up. At Deneysville you can go pretty big, lol.

well i won't be able to use carp there. The owners will probably call the police thinking i chopped up one of their carp. I'm gonna try some sardines and i will let you guys know how it goes :) thanks for all the input gents, i appreciate it !

@ Josh are you referring to Rust in Orbi just outside Alberton near the MotoX track? If so dont worry about big baits cause there arent really any monsters there...i reckon maybe max 6 or 7 kg with 2-3 kg being the avg.My friends go there every now and then for a quick throw to target carp and they get picked up by cats, fishing plain bol and supercast bananana millie hook baits.

If you want to target bigger fish 15kg plus in or near JHB you will need to get to Vaaldam/river, Harties or roodeplaat.

How old is oribi?

If you going to use sard, cut the up a sard into 3 for a feeding spot. than use a whole sard as bait. I hvae also taken 3 sards with a size 12/0 super circle and put it through the eyes of 3 sards. if you going for sall cats cut the sard inhalf. 80% of my fish on sard have come off the til and section. Wierd as you would expect the crushed head section to produce more.

@nobbles at least 10 to 15 years if not older, most people know it as the R50 dam.

I havent been there in about 2 years but from what i can remember It is rectangular in shape approx 180m x 80m .

Very popular dam for the locals but almost exclusively for targetting carp. Babrbel are all in the 2-3 kg range and could be fun on very light tackle.

Josh let me know if you have any success as I only live about 15 minutes away and might consider returning for a quick 1 or 2 hour sessions in summer when im not at the vaal. Ive got a new UL ugly stik ,baby stradic and 8lb power pro that needs to be flexed a bit
