Hi

We are 2 friends spearfishing together for the last year,we've shot alot of Blacktails,Zebra,Stone bream,Galjoen,Grunter,Jan Bruin etc that is the smaller fish, but nice for a braai. We both are not keen of sharks so we don't go in to deep,we normally dive at Swartvlei or Flat Rock. We've seen some nice Big Musselcrackers at Swartvlei but that was the biggest so far,is there any other spots we can try that is not to deep, where we can shoot bigger fish but also not in a shark area.Little Brak to Mosselbay is full of sharks so we won't go there. We also want to know if there is any spearfishing clubs or competitions in the George area?

Regards

Jan

Dear Jan

I am a local from Knysna area but not a spearo .

Just to inform you that Swartvlei has big white Sharks too ,but chances are slim of being attacked .

You can contact Neels at Myoli Beach 0722872475 he is an old Spearo in the area and a very friendly chap ,im sure he can give you some tips .

We saw two guys in a rubber duck just of the Sedge mouth three weeks ago when the vis was so great ,i think they were trying for kob .

Good luck !!

Hi

Thanks for the tip will look out for the White sharks,we saw some smaller sharks at Swartvlei and the biggest so far was a 2 meter shark just luckily lying quitely in a cave but we didn't take chances and decided to dive further away. We're still diving in swallow waters, maybe up to 4 meters at the moment, so we'll probably see bigger sharks in the deeper water, but won't go there! Will contact Neels for some tips, thanks for the advice, and enjoy fishing.

Cheers

Jan

Jan

I met a chap who works for a gas outfit in Mitchell st. George. His name is Deon and dives regularly at Gerickes. He doesnt go deep but works the caves and holes for crackers,Baardmanne and other braai visse.

He did tell me about a resident raggie at Gerickes(small submarine) and is also aware of two resident GW's at Die Oog off Goukamma as well as a resident GW at the Leentjies Klip/Swart river to Vic Bay.

However around the corner toward Wilderness along the cliffs, you will find a spot that is quite unspoilt and un fished.....shhhh!!

Are you using a shark shield?

I think I sort of know which spot your talking about along the cliffs at Wilderness. We always stop at Dolphins Point to look down, and it is realy looking good down there when it's flat, will try it sometime.I don't have a shark shield,I heard it's between R5000 - R6000 very expensive,I think they should make a cheaper shark shield in SA so we all can afford to have it.About a month ago I shot a nice cracker close to Gerickes, about 300 meters walk from Gerickes towards Wilderness side. There is some nice spots further down towards Wilderness but it is a very long walk,so go early. We go on weekends, but lately the sea has been very rough for spearfishing,so we can't wait for that perfect flat water weekend to come...

I did mean the area west side of Gerickes, as you mentioned, some very nice fishing/diving areas, and some large species resident there.Water must be quiet though I agree.

Our latest spot this June - July is close to Gwaing river through Pacalsdorp George, but it is worth it.You drive till you see Earny Els Golf Estate across the river and stop at the caravan park at top at Gwaing River.Ask the care taker where you can fish,he looks like a drunk old white guy but he knows the spots he calls it the "gat" so if you look at the see walk left through the caravan park the first right path through the bush follow it till the end, and you'll have 2 options go left or right. Both are working(left I prefer),we went fishing and caught alot of fish and hooked something big but lost it at the rocks. We are waiting for it to go flat to go spearfishing, heard from the lonely care taker there is some teenagers that is spearing big fish down in the gat.It looks save and not sharky,so waiting for a good day....there is a big rock infront of you to cut of the sharks...

Hi Jan,

PM me your number, i'm very much in the same boat as you. Also do alot of "puddlejumping" in and around wilderness area and often need dive buddies. Would like to meet up some time and go for a dive when conditions improve. Winter time I hunt a lot but when spring and summer arive i'm either at or in the water.

Just a freaked out by the grey suits, I met that resident white in front of wilderness many years back, and since then I have never quite been the same ! That's why I prefer scratching around in holes closer to shore.

Cheers,

Armand

Cracker will be around from October, when they are fat and as they spawn, so they get thinner.

Check for them around the white water.

Thanks! We used to go to Hartenbos every year for about 20 years. However, that was before I started spearfishing.. Will defenately make a note to try the spot out should I ever be fortunate enough to go there again!
