As a guide for anglers who catch a previously tagged fish.

What to do in terms of contributing to the research effort:

If you catch a fish that has a tag in it, leave the tag in the fish and take the following detail:

Tag Number normally preceded by an A, B or C which designates the Tag type.

Measure the fish / shark and if unsure how, measure full length and fork or pre-caudal notch

If you have a scale or are going to keep the fish weigh it for accurate records for comparison to the Weight to Length Stats.

Note date, place and time of capture.

Download and complete the attached spreadsheet and email it to Stuart Dunlop of ORI sdunlop@ori.org.za or oritag@ori.org.za

You and the person making the original tagging will receive a reply on how long the fish was free since previous capture, growth in time free, distance traveled ie, place of last capture vs place of re-capture

Thanks in advance for all those who contribute to the efforts of conservation

These are only Oceanographic tagging kits

Tagging doesn't work in freshwater as the method causes internal infections in Freshwater.

The ORI tagging projects are for Oceonagraphic research only

I'm not aware of tagging projects on Tigers other than a project that was done in the Kruger last year

If I wanted to start tagging fish in mosselbay? What steps do I take to obtain the kits and what is the process? I release about 95% of the fish I catch and I think it would be great to contribute...

Interesting, one of Paul Cowley's fish from when he was still Dr. and not Professor.

Thanks guys..Very interesting. I'm shocked at how slow the poenskoppe grew when I read the recaps from the last two newsletters. I knew they grew slow, I've bitched a few times here at guys for keeping fish but you know how it is with a fish brought up from the deep, you need to be prepared with a deep release weight to get it down otherwise it is stuffed..But anyway I can't believe how slow they really grow, I had no idea.

Copied from the newsletter, that is a growth of 255mm (25.5cm) in 18.5 years! An average of 13mm a year!! Jeepers. That fish could have been 60 years old already and isn't even yet one of the trophy fish you see people have caught. On my conversion tables that is a fish of about 17 kg. The species gets up to 40 kg.

That fish is at least 17/18 years old and is only of 6.24kg of mass. From my tables that is a fish of about 60cm. Like I said I can't believe it. But there it is, the data does not lie. In shock. I would have figured a 6kg reef fish like that would be maybe 6 years old. 17/18 years I would never have guessed. This fish is approaching the size of sex change to a male.

The tag data from these two fish does not correlate with the accepted data..It is said that they live up to 45 years, but the first fish was tagged at about the same size as the second fish was recapped so one can guesstimate pretty accurately. Discounting the time it took the second fish to get to almost a kg, the age of the first fish can then be guessed at least 18 yrs + 17 yrs= 35 yrs old abouts already (but somehow growing at the average rate of 13mm a year???) and it is not yet even of the size of a 20kg fish. And they get to about 35 -40kg maximum. I think that we made a mistake doing ring counting on scales of large specimens in earlier studies and I think the fishes are far more sensitive to fishing than we thought. I think 45 years max is a bit short a count for a fish that is growing at 13mm a year and is already 35 years old on a conservative estimate and still has at least double its size to grow, ja thats my guess. So I think that the tag data from all the tagged fish would change our understanding. Is this species still allowed to be commercially landed?
