Two blues released off Richards Bay on Saturday with another two dropped. First Blues released at the OET at Sodwana - the girls have arrived. Leave for R Bay next week.

Three marlin the last 2 days:
Great day out on the water on Rampage yesterday raising 3 and releasing a Blue and a stripe. Water is pushing in nicely and the fish is coming on big time. Good stripes up at Sodwana with doubles being reported. Had two fish under the boat while fighting the first stripe! Weather still very unsettled but looking like a cracker season!

Nother flag but "only" a Spearfish with a couple of Dorado and a Wahoo to get the species count up. Pearler day but out for tomorrow. One other Blue came out on a slow day before the weather.

Very early departure followed by a hiccup that saw us having to return to port and swop boats onto Rampage and start again. Eventually got out in rain and heavy conditions that were not pleasant. Fortunately things calmed down and cleared later and as the sea settled we had some action. Always good to have Mick on board and glad to keep our run going over the years. Mick was looking for a stripe to catch 5 of the 6 Billfish available on our coast. Proud that this was achieved today and all his fish have been caught with Reel Magic Charters( Stripe, Spear, Sail, Black, Blue), making him one of a handful of anglers to achieve this and all with one skipper.
Released a stripe after mid day and then had an hour over the high tide where we dropped a double of what I suspect were Spearfish. Worked the area and landed one shortly after. Micks second with us and rounding off a good day after a rocky start. Many thanks to Deon Auby for allowing us to use his boat at short notice. Much appreciated D! looking forward to fishing with you next week!!

Been a torrid two days of rain and rough conditions interspersed with a run of boat issues that would deter the most determined fisherman out there. Thankfully we managed to hold it together somehow. Thanks Mick for your patience and understanding....
Managed another Blue of 360lbs which unfortunately tail wrapped and died on us on Thursday. Also dropped a Stripe that did its rounds on the teaser, left the swim bait and bashed the longs before coming off after a short run.
Yesterday we worked the same area but with water temp going down through the day we suspected the water had been disturbed by the South West on Wed/Thurs and proved so on the SST map. Unfortunately these images are only loaded a day later or one could have changed the plan. Ended a great run of six days of a bill or more a day.
Still waiting patiently for the current to push down all the way and bring the fish down properly,

Been a long week of drought due to the water temp drop and off color water since last Friday week. Did a few trips with no results for all boats. Water pushed down on Sunday and the fish started to turn on again. Dropped a fish on Sunday then had a bit of a mare yesterday losing a bunch that didn't stay buttoned. Super thankful when the 5th fish stayed the distance. Was feeling the pressure of a second days charter without result.
Current came down solid yesterday and the bite was on on the tide late afternoon. Hoping the south of today doesn't disturb a good thing. Should be out again tomorrow so we will soon see.
Congrats Jaco on your first marlin. RMC making dreams come true!

Late launch today due to clients driving from Sodwana so only got out to the 100m line at 7.30. Raised a Spearfish that tried its best to get hooked but failed miserably. Lucky for him no dentist bill.
Hooked up and released another Stripey at 9.00 and then had a slow mid day as the wind dropped and the sea went millpond. Had to be back early for a flight so worked back to harbour and raised a Blue that crashed the short right and jumped at the boat spitting the lure. Been a struggle with them the last two days while the Stripes have been sticking. Normally the other way around??
Crazy game!

One thing about Richards Bay is that you better be prepared to fish in wind and tough conditions or stay home. If this place had the weather some places have it would be silly how good it would be. Constant south winds battering the current make it incredibly hard and changes the water daily. Anyway the fish always eat in the south if you can stay out and so it was again today with all the boats out getting fish.
We released a blue that made a spectacular bite after I marked it coming up on the echo and everyone was looking out and waiting for the bite which came immediately. Rampage and another two boats got two while we missed another two in the rough conditions. All good and looking forward to getting out tomorrow on a better forecast.

Had a slower day yesterday as the sea settled and the south dropped. Some Dorado action before going tight on a half beak swim bait with circle....was so good to get a Blue bite on the rig and started celebrating a solid hookup...the 400lb Blue sat until 50m from the boat when it did a jump and spat the hook.....mmm been like that with them. Turned back to the mark and immediately went tight on a Stripe so all good. Slow afternoon with only Dorry action. Few days break with buster south AGAIN today back out when its nice again....compliments of the season to all!!

Awesome day out yesterday with all boats getting into fish over the whole area. Dropped 3 fish early on, one being the best fish I have seen this season. Finally held onto one mid day as the bite came back on with all the boats in our area going tight. One boat had a triple on Blues but unfortunately only boated one. We also released a small Blue shallow on the way home so all in all a good day with two Blue releases. Rampage got two, Reel Magic one, Squid lips one , Addicted one and a number of others had one release. Weather shitty today or would have been out there for sure. Waiting for a gap....Bite is ON!!!!

Late report on yesterdays Blue release for JC Potgieter and the fish and prospects going forward after today:
So the new year didn't kick in as hoped and we had a pretty rough day out there. Started off good and worked north where we had some Dorado action, only to run into a wall of cold green water coming down the coast. Was forced to turn and work back to the harbor and out deeper. Wind got pretty nasty at 30 NE knots as the sea turned to porridge. Ran into Reel Magic who had just hooked up on a nice 500+ that they released. The forecast of 3-11 knots at midday obviously was a myth and we tried working the area for a while but it wasn't feasible.
Big south now and very worried about the prospects after this blow, The current has been reverse and non existent for the last few days with the fish pushing deeper and deeper as the water color has gone off. Have had a great run of fish the last week or so and have a very busy week ahead. Here's hoping that the south doesn't turn the water green all round and K O the fishing completely....

Had to work far north again looking for water and ended up past Mapelane in 27 c water but unfortunately still off colour. Very good water further north but out of range. Managed a small Black in 600m and then moved to the inside looking for another black on the 100m line on the way home.
Reel Magic stayed out deep all day and didnt raise anything so the Blues are definitely missing in these poor water conditions.
Got extremely lucky at the death out front in 150m tagging another very fiesty little Black of 50 kg that gave Deon a proper hiding boat side. Had a good laugh at his expense as he got tatoo'ed for his trouble. Always the little ones that get you...
Some hard N E wind expected the next few days and hoping they will chase this current down at last. Been a funny season with counter current and very patchy water.
Tally now 21 for 21 days so not bad. Hopefully get Wave Walker up and running in the next week and do a few test runs if water improves. Till then...

Have had a lot of strong N E the last few days so unable to fish but great news as the current is now pushing down hard. Latest SST map unavailable but this was two days ago...Going to be an interesting next two weeks as we go onto the moon. Think the action is going to come thick and fast especially with good Blue marlin action up north the last few days....bring it on!

Going to blow a bugle on the page today just to put some things in perspective.

We have many charter inquiries through the year and most people gag at the price of a days fishing. Unfortunately most people don't have a clue how much it costs to run these big outfits and the time and effort that goes into making a successful charter day on Marlin. For the record we are at about half the international rate to begin with.
That said we have raised a over 60 marlin, raising one on every charter this year, catching 21 fish in 21 days fishing and missed a landing on only one charter.
That's more than a 90% success rate on MARLIN!!!
That is unbelievable by any world standard.

Here's one clients response to a days fishing with us:

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for an awesome day yesterday, it was a pleasure to go fishing with you!

I would also like to compliment you on the way you handled the clients and boat. With some inexperienced fishermen on board you ensured that they did not embarrass themselves by assisting with landing the fish through some excellent skippering. Your knowledge and experience can be seen by someone that is a certified boat skipper and has some fishing knowledge, but nowhere near yours. Yours can only come through the clearly seen love for fishing and hours and hours of honing your craft into the complete package you so effortlessly present. Well done to you!

And that is exactly why I love doing this sport and give 100% every day out there.

There is no guarantee on catching a marlin every day and having that expectation is totally unrealistic for marlin fishing anywhere in the world.

The bottom line as they say: You get what you pay for !!

Many thanks to all who fished with us in 2017, looking forward to a cracker 2018.

Nother Blue again today on a rather slow day but to be expected with a massive cyclone swell running. Couple of nice Dorado to go with the blue. First ever day on the ocean and fishing for Christo and he gets both a blue and a dorry. Be some envious friends out there.. Water purple and good current - looking good for the next few weeks and the full moon coming soon.

Quick trip back to R Bay to fish with good friend Deon Auby and what a great weekend we had. Caught a blue every day(450,400,350) making it 26 for the season going 3-3 with 100% hookup and reaching 300 for RMC at the same time. Always easier when you see the good water is there and you go when you have a good idea it will be on and the weather is great. Richards Bay is a world class fishery for sure
