I have found the bigger pet shops stock them for reptiles. They are also cheaper than the fishing shops.

I myself don't like using then as you seldom catch anything ove 6kg on them... If I want to catch barbel, I want to cath BIG barbel.

Hey guys, i also find that i dont get big barbels on platties. But i must admit a "Fast" bait for barbel is normal chicken livers you buy in the shops, use a little cotton to make a blob bait and in a few minutes you will have one on your hook.

jis okes me and livers just arent good friends, my usual bait for barbel is chicken hearts, I put around 5 or 6 of them on a 7/0 mustad and I usually have great success with them but in that same dam there is a spot where I can walk to from my house and the fish their are not keen on the hearts at all so we have swung some platties at them and the results have almost converted me into a plattie guy ! I also never liked platties cause they just didnt have enough blood and smell in my opinion !

I also have tried chicken livers, in 4 years have never caught a single cat on livers. It seems to be the go to bait, i have a feeling the barbel may be learning that this bait means trouble for them. Well atleats at shongweni. Sardines are my new go to bait, have never failed me thus far. I use ghost cotton in the white tube to tie all me bait, including redbrest heads ive used. Very happy with it, and with the lack of movement in the fresh water holds up well and doesnt let strands loose to wave around.

jislaaikit you see ! that sounds like a helluva good bait ! I would never have thought of that, sardines are meant for the sea and meat is meant for the dam, that is what one would think and just the other day I was saying to my fishing buddy what if oyu through a big blob of beef in the ocean I reckon it will catch fish but everyone always says that where will an ocean fish get beef from ?! but that just goes to show smell and and size plays a big part in catching the big "snorbekke" and I will definitely be giving the sards a try next outing !
thanx for the heads up:wfish::S

So hang dit ook af watse bait by watse dam goed gaan werk.

Vir my is platties bobaas hier by ons. Stywe lyne manne ek pak nou my gear en sal n report maandag doen!

Agree with Skuimkop and Cheetah,

My trip to the Vaal river in September, platties were the only baits that worked.
We tried day olds, chicken hearts and worms but only the platties brought us luck.
My friend fished the exact same spots the following week, not a single bump on the plattie rods-only the day olds had runs.

I went through for a quick session 2 weeks ago,
day olds-nothing
Chicken hearts had a few runs ,we only managed to land 1 cat though.
It was a strange time at the vaal as not a single carp was caught, not even the slightest bump on the carp rods.

So you can see that diff days = diff baits.

I try and take 3 diff baits every time I go ,

We would of blanked on some of these trips if we didnt switch baits.
