Koppies Dam

This past weekend I took my boy and his little mate Juwan to Koppies to attempt to catch some new PB Barbel. I was looking for something really big (20kg plus) but moreso to get the boys into some hard fighting cats. They were tasked with getting some muddies and small carp as bait initially. I was amazed at the size of some of these muddies with 1.5kg muddies not uncommon.

Ok, so the barbel rods went in. One of these was the custom built roepstok which Craig Neil made up from a blue marlin 3 piece G3 (4-6 ounce) This beauty was paired with a torium 14 with 50 lbs whiplash braid and a 60 cm 1mm leader. The bait was a whole muddie on a 12/0 Mustad Z steel circle hook. The bait was dropped in 2m deep water with my specimen carp dingy. The temperature was 19.5 degrees. It wasn't long before this new rod went away and I explained to my son (5 years old) not to strike, but to reel down on the fish for the circle hook to set properly. He did it like a pro and the fight was on. Needless to say that the directness of the braid had Vian pulled off his feet a couple of times against a fairly tight drag setting. His facial expressions made me giggle as it was clearly hard work for the young man.

On with the roepstok
