Hi,

Thought this may be an interesting post. What is your favorite type of reel for barbel, both art lure and bait fishing.

I have 2 Penn coffe grinders and a Shimano Tld 40/20.

Very impressed with the penns, the drag is as smooth as silk, the shimano gives me much better casting and i use this for larger baits.

What are you guys using

Nobb

I suppose you mean 20/40 ?

I prefer centre pin reels as I got better control over the fish .

Also like to use my ABU 5600 EXT Pro or Daiwa SL20

20/40 would be correct. Ive been looking at an ABU and retire one of my penn's to going back to being a boat reel. How does the Diawa perform?

Vir die groot katte en waar obstruksies is verkies ek my PENN Jigmaster 500 bo my Shimano TDL 20/40. Maar my favourite katrol sal verseker my Shimano Calcutta wees op my Ugly stick natuurlik.

Vir kunsaas is dit tesun my Shimano Slade en die Shimano Catica D maar ek dink die Catica is dalk hier 'n kort koppie voor.

For Big Baits my Jigmaster 500L.
Also ordered a shimano 15/30 with a few tweaks from Enigma.

On the artlure side my Shimano Stradic 4000fi

Hi Guys,

Well, I predominantly fish for vundu as opposed to barbel, and my 'go to' reels are a Abu 7000 LD (lever drag) version, and a TLD 15 - both good reels, and with big beaits you can get suprisingly good distance on the TLD...:fswim

Guys,

Slow with the massive reels. Why dont use the ligther stuff. I use me ABU Soron 4000. Barbell dont stand a chance !! Sounds like youre fishing for sea dwelling species.

Hi Menofish,

Well, from my perspective; I would be very interested to see you stop a 70-80 lb vundu in a tree filled river on the gear you mention!

Light tackle is great - and I do pursue those options as well (caught marlin on spinning set-ups/stella's for example), but there is no point in light gear if you will lose fish - and they will then have a hook and length of line attached..

Very much depends on the waters in which you fish..

RF.

With the "roepstok" an old Penn 500L and 7ft rods I use Shimano Symetre, an awsome reel with serious drag washers.

Out of all my reels I love the 4000 stradic the most, however you are going to get a hiding if fishing in heavy structure as it doesnt have the capacity to hold thick mono and heavy braid.

I use the stradic on a certain spot on the vaal river where there is little structure and fish within 50 m from the bank or off the boat.

With 20 pound fireline tracer braid i get about 220 metres on the stradic which you can see is going to be a problem if fishing from the bank in say Bloemhof etc

Tight Lines

Ek sit met 3 x Shimano calcattas 1 x amper nuut, 1 x effens gebruik, 1 x gebruik, maar almal in uitstekende werkende toestand.

Laat weet asb of iemand dalk belangstel, my prys is so te se om weg te gee.

I prefer my heavier reel tp my lighter peen coffe grinders for one reason, I havent caught alot of cats but had a storming run on the biggest bait ive used thus far. I was using half a hand lenth tilapia. Put it 150m out and had scant line left on my reel. Reeled it in about 30m to give me some room. Fish hit the bait and pissed off at a rate of knotts. I had no chance with my line capacity left to try stop and turn that fish. Th next day i drove my ass dwn to the tackle shop bought 500 yards of p-line braid. All of that is nw on my Shimano 20/40 plus 180m of sufix synergy 45 pound. I will ot make the mistak again with line capacity on a reel.

Out of interest what is enigma going to do to your reels antjar

@nobbles

On the jigmaster- carbonex drag and an Alu spool because the bakelite spool is terrible and dont want it to crack when I get a big cat running for cover

15/30 is getting carbonex and a bearing upgrade, bit of overkill for freshwater but it was done so that i can target some bigger boys out at sea.

which brings me to another point regarding the "heavy tackle"
I now have a reel that i can use to target cats here in JHB and take to the coast to target some edibles and use off the ski which is a massive plus as a decent grinder in the 8000 to 12000 size is going to set you back R2000 and doesnt always like the salt water esp off a ski.

Want to add a nighthawk soon must be great fighting on a 1:1 gear ratio

Flippen hel dit is nou bleddie nice Simen. Nou net wanneer die cash skraps is kom plaas jy so onverantwoordelike post. Dit sal mos maak dat ek my kar drank winkel toe moet stoot, lol.

I have a Penn 505 HS Super Jigmaster still brand new in the box for donkeys years and never got round to even putting line on it.

Would this reel be suitable for the big cats?

opinions will be appreciated
Thanks
