Overwinds with Baitcaster reels

Hi Guys

Thought I'd let you know how I got rid of the frustrating phenomenon known as Overwinds using my Baitcasting reel.

Reel your lure (entire rig) up close to the tip of your rod.  Thighten your cast control on the right fully and loosen magnetic drag on the left completely.  Now hold the rod at about 60[suP]0[/suP] press your cast lever and slowly start loosening your cast control on the right so that your lure slowly travels down to mother earth at a rate of about three seconds per meter.  Once there, thighten your magnetic drag on the left to almost full or full, reel up the lure and cast and it should not overwind at all even if you do not have your thumb on the spool. If not, repeat the process and ensure that your lure falls down to earth slower than before, you'll eventually figure out what the speed should be.

Please, remember that you need to repeat this process for every lure type/weight and rig type/weight that you change.  If you only replace your ripped lure with another exactly the same then it isn't necessary to go through this process again.

Saved me countless hours of sorting out the ensuing "Kraaines" as a result of an unwanted and very unwelcome Overwind.

Try it, it works.

Here's how I solved mine.....

Bough a coffee grinder reel... Shimano FB750 and spooled it with fireline... and voila!!! :D:D:D

That's the other option, works just as well I suppose, also suppose me buying a baitcaster is more a thing of using the equipment I'm suppose to be using, i.e. Carp fishing, You Just Have To Have NIGHTHAWKS.

Anyhow, though I'd share the info with the other fashion junkies like myself.

Viva le Baitcaster!!!

Hi LGF. I'm certainly a baitcaster fan. But I do find that different types of baitcasters have very different actions compared to others, for example, I have the Millionaire series which is a fantastic reel, very smooth, but I tend to have a lot more overwinds, especially when throwing lighter rigs. I don't have that problem on my Crestfire or any of the other similarly designed baitcasters.

But, I will certainly give your method a bash. Sounds like it could work.

Cheers

Hi Mornay

Man, where do I begin?

Let me tell you, I've also owned a Crestfire, and it was great.  When I closed my eyes, and ripped broad gashes through my credit card, aquirering a Quantum Energy PT, 7 bearing, 7.1:1 Burner reel (baitcaster) I realised the diffirence between the two.

The crestfire is not so sensitive to the tuning method described and well really not as smooooooth as the energy.  Yes it cost a whole lot more than the crestfire but it is worth every sinlge cent (Including VAT).

I just love the set I've got currently, I don't think there's any better for me personally, the reel and rod is just perfect, balanced, man it's just really great and an absolute pleasure hunting with.  The rod I've combined with this reel is a 7ft Quantum Tour PT, Med action.

I know there's better out there than what I've got, but like I said I doubt if there's any better for myself.

In the end, its all about what works for you :p

I am very happy with my rig, but I want to get a baitcaster in future. I gotta see what its about.....

Loams

Let me tell you the thing about a baitcaster, its in a great deal like a coffee grinder, there is however one major diffirence, you can cast ultra light rigs/lures the same distance as heavier rigs and lures which is something you or me at least just simply cannot do with the coffee grinder.

Well, other than that it's really not that difficult and extremely diffirent perhaps the only extreme is that it sits on top of the rod.

I had struggled for a very long time with these types of reels, to such an extent that I gave away a brand new Penn 49, for free, cause it just gave me toooooooo much hell.  It took alot of me to actually buy my first baitcaster and really, I prefer it to any of my three coffee grinders.

But like you said, it's what works for you that counts at the end of the day.

Hey LGF,

Did you have to look in a french dictionary to qoute that stuff or are you gifted in the French language? Fancy that...a french speaking bass angler......;)

Seriously, though. It is as you say, the Crest fire is a decent reel but has it's limitations, although it was a good way to learn the art of angling with a baitcaster. Hence the reason why I purchased the Millionaire series. It just needs a whole lot of getting used to. I was fortunate in the sense that I was introduced to bass angling with a baitcaster, so taking it from there was no problem. I find a baitcaster to be far more versatile and controlled than coffee grinders. It has a certain finess about it. The midas touch!

Guten Tag Herr Mornay

Kein bin ich gerade glücklich gewesen, einige Sprachen einschließlich französisches, Spanischen und selbstverständlich Deutschen erlernt zu haben.  Which roughly translates to:  No i have just been fortunate to have learnt a few languages including french, spanish and of course german.

Well enough about that, next time you're in a tackle shop, like Bassworld in Centurion behind Makro, do yourself but not your budget the favour, and check out the Quantum Energy series, man it's a killer and an absolute machine, well oiled, naturally.

No really, i don't have any not even the slightest complaint, there's one thing however, with that process of tuning the casting control and stteing the magnetic cast brake for each different lure weight, I sometimes forget to set the magnetic cast brake and EEEEIIIIIISSSHHHHH, a very serious overwind, I mean cutting the line serious.

But school fees are expensive I've heard.

Mina kuluma lo Isizulu, noma Afrikaans (which roughly translates to "I speak Zulu and Afrikaans. Good old home grown lingo). But I do have an ear for Dutch and German as well. But enough showing off now. Loams might start getting confused, considering we are the only three on this topic and he hasn't broken out into any foreign tongues (as yet).....:D. I see he's bragging with a new avatar of some nasty looking Tiger. Was this one yours this time, Loams?;)

Man, don't tell me about school fees and overwinds:swear. I've had more than my fair share of tossing good line down the crapper!! Not only on my bait casters, but all my surf reels as well (which hurts even more 'cos one can toss up to 100m of expensive flourocarbon leader with Siglon top line). I once sat for 5 days with my SL50 surf reel unpicking a crows nest of tragic proportions just to save myself the heartache of having to cut it off.
The things we go through for a little bit of pleasure and satisfaction.......

A ke bue Setswana? (Should I speak Setswana then??)

No, that is not my pic of a Tiger.... In fact, no pics exist of me and Tigers in them, and that is a long story, which I choose to not share :D:D

I am just enjoying your overwind stories, and laughing behind your backs.... But I will get a baitcaster with my new rod... purely as they actually have different applications, but first, I need to get my current rig under the belt 100% and learn its limitations and strengths....

i have a black belt...

Hey LGF come now i see we have a few guys from JHB on this forum , so lets try n setup a social , i'm keen on trying to hunt them LGF's.

Well, just the thing I had in mind, a social of some sort.  We (One of my best Buds and I) are looking at two venues this Sat (tomorrow) being either Murraypark (Presidents) Dam in Springs or a place I phoned yesterday called The Bass Pond just past Witbank.

Neither is fixed as we have to call "The Guy" at The Bass Pond this afternoon to check if he can accomodate us tomorrow as the venue mainly caters for lodge fishing, but should he not have 12 people fishing that stays in the lodges then he will accomodate us.

So, yes I know that helps a social gathering (legal or Illegal) squat, which is why I would suggest that maybe we set a date, time and venue and  then go.

I haven't hunted at Murraypark nor at The Bass Pond nor at Edenvale's Quarry YET, and maybe we should set one of these venues for a social?

What say thee?

Happy Huntings

That would be nice!!

And perhaps the forum can have a tournament of sorts one day. Salties vs Freshies, where one day we all fish on fresh water, and the next salt water... Then we can see if we can beat them Salties on their own t(s)urf... Mind you, they could possibly whip us at freshwater fishing too!!!

Anyway, let us know when you guys wanna do a social, and I will try and make it.

Cheers,

Loams

@LFG i'm quiet keen on fishing at the quarry , i heard from the guy that runs the place that the s,a junior guys fished there and the was monster bass that came out. He also said that the quarry goes from 6m to 28m , so i'm assuming that there are a few nice ledges there that will hold some big bass.

i'm keen on a social but on a sat only .

let me know

The same goes for me regarding Sat's although I'm not having the Sunday family thing like you's.

I'm must admit, I'm sort of the confort zone type of person, meaning that at times I'll stick to venues that I know well rather to visit a new one, having said that, I also have times that I need to get to a new place, and quite frankly, Edenvale's Quarry have been Haunting me for almost three months now.

So, expect a post with a date not that far into the future (on a Sat) with Edenvale as the venue for a social, really, I have to get rid of this ghost called Edenvale Quarry that wakes me up at night.  Funny thing is, I don't really know why the hell I haven't gone there yet?

same here i've known abt this place now for a year but never went there cos i didnt know wat to expect, i know emmerentia and i fished there a lot of times , but now that i found u "pro's" i now more than ever wanna fish for them LFG's

Boet

Pro's...................... well, I'm not so sure that that's a pre or post fix that I can add to my title yet.

Like I said when I posted my fisrt reply/post, I'm new at this and have ONLY been fishing for about two years fo r them LGF's.  But that's one reason why I'm here, to learn to be better so that maybe oneday, if somebody refers to me they say Do you know the Pro-Master-Pro-Bassmaster called LGF...

Thats one of my driving forces in life, to be the best in what ever, and I mean WHAT EVER it is that I do.  Yes even if I act out a little Road Rage, I go all they way to be the BEST Road Rager possible.

No Just kidding, but I'm serious about wanting to be the best I can be at things that are good in nature.

Will Defs let you know when we're going, maybe Loams can also rock up so we can all hunt like Pack-wolves at the Quarry.

Pro's!!!! Hahahaha no my friend not in the least.... If I can be honest, my addiction to LGF's started 6 months ago. I have fished most of my life, but never as seriously as now.

So no, I am certainly not a pro. I just have an addictive personality, and when I do something, I tend to go overboard, and read up and study the subject really well :D

My wife thinks I am weird.... So I have no idea what other people's perception is of me :alien
