North Pier Update

Hello People

We again fished the grave yard on saturday night and sunday morning right through until 3pm on sunday.

Saturday night weather was fine until it started to rain.A few shoal sized kob were caught all ranging from 1kg to 4kg.We did fish until 4am but then the rain became unbearable so i decided to go dry off in the car until it stopped.

At about 6am we started fishing again right at the forehead where Lance Pillay managed to land a small kingie of about 2kg.After that it went dead until Jonah Daniel Landed a 3kg Spotted Rock Cod.{10am}

On his next throw he landed a snapper salmon of about 1kg and for a snapper that is big.We tried sliding baits the whole morning but to no avail the baits kept coming out untouched. So we all decied to concentrate on the edibles Jonah hooking into.

A Jo Burg member Mohamed did join us later on in the morning but also like me and Shaun didnt manage to land anything,I guess Jonah had the midas touch this week end cause he is the only one who landed some good size fish.

All in all we had a good outing with the weather eventually giving us a full days fishing and some results. The pier is still open but not officialy i did see them constructing some sort of boundry fence so i dont no how long we have left to fish the grave yard.

Anyone who has more insight with regards to the closure of north pier please post for us.I have some pics for you all so you have an idea of the conditions at the pier.

The tackle used to by Jonah to land these two fish (Rock Cod-Snapper Salmon)was a

Beach Master Rod Daiwa Saltist 50 and the bait was sardine belly turned inside out with chokka strips put onto the end of the bait looking like tenticles. This seemed to be the key ingredient in Jonah's sucess in landing these two fish.

Lance Pillay used a Loomis 14ft 3piece and a Daiwa sl30h To land the kingie. The bait lanced used was pink prawn{from a seafood shop}not the regular yellow box prawns and chokka which he smashed to a pulp and the presented it like a crayfish tail.

I think in both Lance and Jonah's case the presentation of the baits was key to their sucess.Well guys thats all from me for this trip and North Pier Hope next trip I have even better news for you all.

I may be mistaken, but that snapper salmon looks more like a kob...........doesent a snapper have those huge teeth?

howzit i also thought that

but i was corected when a guy who was there asked if is a kob the why does it have those teeth

this thing had the teeth so im asuming that it has to be a snapper

i could be wrong so dont hold me to it im just going on what i saw when it came out

cheers riymos

maybe we could get some good photos of the diference between the different species of kob we get so we can make a better analisys of them.

also any good pics of thr different rock cod species would be great as i had to wait for ORI to confirm this species.

According To Kzn Wild Life Web site it is a square tail kob.

But i dont knw how come this fish had those tell tail snapper teeth bru.

So i guess its a mixed breed lol....::H

Im gonna foward this pic along with our toothy facts to ORI and see what Elinor has to say.Hopefully she can shed some light on this for us.

Thanks Riymos

According to ori database its a Snapper Kob , i'm just guessing here , but it looks almost the same to me.

Listen that is exactly what i thought but if you look closely at the dorsil fins on the snpper you put up you will see that it is sort of straight with no difference with the height of the fins on the one Jonah caught it is more rounded.

Also if you look at the tail on the one Jonah caught it is a little squarer.

So i guess we all could be wrong i dont really know lol/

Hopefully we get some clarity on this.

Maybe there's been some crossbreeding happening!

But, I think, if its Bronze to Pink on the top and had the long front teeth, then we can safely call it a Snapper Salmon. The Squaretail Kob is kinda Bluish on the top from what I recall.

This ones shape is very much like a typical Kob shape though, with the high backline, maybe because its such a healthy, older and mature specimen, and the body to head proportion is larger than that in a smaller specimen.

Cheers
