Couple weeks ago me and one of my mates tried to get some cats at roodeplaat..so we rigged a couple of carp heads, and rowed them in about 200m. Whole night passed with no takes, but the guys next to us caught 6 nice ones. Couldn't believe they had so much luck and we didn't!! so anyway im thinking that maby our baits were in too deep...

so my question is...do cat's hunt in such deep water(50m+)?

in my opinion i think you were catching too deep as in my experience all my big barbel (30 kg +)were caught in water no deeper than 1.4m max. as i have found the barbel come out of the deep pools at night to hunt for food in the shallows.you can read about it in the BANK ANGLER May issue and if you have any other problems ,contact me Andre

Hi SV Ivee done extensive drifting off my boat for barble and have picked them up a different depths there are days where the sit no deeper than 3 Mtr but then agaian ive also picked them up in 12 mtr depth so my advice would be if you are useing more than one rod for barble put them in at different depths and see what happens but dont be scared to try one as close as 30 mtr from the bank at night. Also fished Roodeplaat from the bank and the barble were max 8 mtr from the side (Yes 8 mtr) and we managed about 17 for the day on platties and that was in December about 4 years ago we couldnt throw far because of the hyacinth.Just my 2c worth.

at harties all the cats come out at about 200m... just remember 200m from the side is not always deeper than 50m from the side...
