Hi Guys, Don't you think released fish are worth more to yourselves as well as the next generation (your sons) than a few shimano reels and tackle bags, just some food for thought. The kob are really in a bad state!!

Ftruter, we base 99% of our competitions on catch and release here at SSEC. We have a point system specifically devised to promote catch and release of bigger specimens, rewarding the angler handsomely. For example the fish I kept today only got me 10 points in our club comp. Had I released it I would have earned about 80 points. The winner of our club comp for this month that run in conjunction with the kob comp, won because he released his fish. However in the case of the comp, handsome prizes and allowing the guys the entire false bay, to prevent the possibility of cheating we decided to have a weigh in. Our previous open comp was up to the angler and catch and release was possible because the area was much smaller. I trust this makes sense.

Hi Marthin, thanks for your response, it does clear things up and I am glad and almost proud in a way that the comp guys have brought the "more points for released fish" in. Why don't you make ALL your comps catch and release where possible. The term "weigh in" has then just become misleading and should be changed.

People tend to get upset if you tell them what to do. So when we organise open competitions to the public, and it's in a small enough area where one can keep an eye, we leave the decision up to the angler. This has brought on very positive results so far regarding release. During such a comp if u catch a 50cm kob and release it and I catch a 50cm kob and keep it, u win for example. We have a galjoen clinic and comp coming up, where the prizes will be close to nothing seen in the western cape for shore based angling to date. We will give more detail, but for now one of the prizes is a helicopter flip for 4 around the peninsula. Here is the problem with length measurements tho. The day we held our kob clinic, we went on lenght measurements to enable catch and release. The first and second fish were kept by the anglers, as this is their choice. But it clearly showed the problem with length measurements. The winning fish was a couple of cm bigger than the guy who came second. But everyone present could see the second fish was much fatter and bigger than the one that came first. So when you have a comp where the prizes are going to tally up to R30 000, you can see that there could be a small riot and questions being asked. But it is a problem that we are working on, and you have a good point. The nice thing about catch and release tournaments, is that if galjoen are biting, you can continue targetting them and catch 50 for the day if you want. We have not finalized the prizes for the comp, but perhaps a prize for most galjoen caught can have anglers look at releasing. I think catch and release only has one hope, if you give the angler the choice and don't force it on them. My personal motto in club comps is first one goes in the box, release and score points after that. But keep following the ssec threads,

So the big day finally arrived.... I had slept exactly 2 and a half hours. Livebait was sorted thanx to my uncle, Rupert N. I can't throw a thrownet, so he managed to throw them for me. We were only able to get small ones, but on his second last attempt het got a nice one, and as i put it into the livewell, i told him "dis n kabeljou daai". Thanx again oom. So everyone started arriving at the Engen on the N2 from about 4 the morning. When i got there Craigie Boy was already there, he must have had an oops in the bed or been kicked out or both....
