Where you see the bookmark , thats where its at. R30.00 per person to get in. But dont expect anything earth shattering. We went on monday and after chatting with the owner of the farm , established that there are no catches of Steenbras reported for a while now. Seems the larger Elf have finished spawning and the river is full of hungry , juvenile Elf.We took a fishing duck up , which I bought from Sportsmans over christmas ( my gift to myself ) , with a Watersnake electric motor( saltwater type ).

I have had great succcess with this combination fishing Knysna and now Veldrif. my wife ( who is new to fishing , and as a wife to me ) , is targetting various species of fish , already under the belt streepies , dassies , tobies , Leervis , Witsteenbras , spotted Grunter .....now it was the turn of Elf and therefore the trip. We also wanted to try taking elf on dropshot.

I trawled ( the Watersnake motor trawls at a perfect speed , and being electric is silent , unlike some of the other water users ) , two different lures , a transparent minnow , and a chartereuse minnow , about 3". The Elf went crazy for the chartereuse , which shows that dark baits in dirty water , and transparent light baits in clrear water is the way to go . The other lure didnt get a look in , and we ended up trawling chatereuse on both rods ( pinky rods with 5 pound line and 11.5 kg leader for the hungry Elf.

It pays to trey two different lures to see how the fish are feeding. i also wanted to test some lures because next weekend we are booked at the cabin at De Mond , and we are gonna give the lures a real testing.

After losing a few lures to larger Elf , we went to shore and flicked off the shore. Same result. The elf were so hungry you got a fish each cast , using a jerky , fast retrieve. I am now hooked on dropshot. We also tried some bait , sards and pike , but damaged a lot of the fish because they took the hook in deep. ( those wont be wasted and will be thrown as drift bait , into the river at De Mond at night for kob , next weekend )

My wife got plenty of her target fish , and I got Elf on dropshot. There is nothing else to offer there and if someone can assist me in understanding where the big Elf go to , please advise.

Are guys using petrol outboards there too?
I also heard that some times during the year they catch nice big kob there, but it is a battle to get your baits through the elf!

They come upriver from Veldrif for pleasure cruises and try to make as much noise and wake as possible to get adoring looks from the banks........wankers.

I tried to get info on spawning habits of Elf and Kob for that area , to judge when you can hook up on the mmommas and pappas........Dont think anything can survive with the amount of juvenile Elf araound.

Sounds like the pirannhas in the Amazon!! I have caught plenty of the little buggers on spinners in front of the Veldrif hotel. I would like to go try out the farm when i get back home, might be a bit hesitant to put my feet over the side of my ski with all those sharp beaks around!

What about putting out a live elf for the bigger fellows??

Gonna try some frozen juvenile elf...those that were damaged , at De Mond for kob and Leerie.......Will post a topic when I get back. There are 10 of us going and the focus is dropshotting , Leeries , kob , and Steenbras from the mouth.

When will you guys be going?? I am sure that those small elf are going to work well!!

Going this weekend. A little birdie told me that Elf and Harder on drift , at the bend in the river near the chalet , at night , iis a guaranteed hook up on kob. We will be working the river mouth as well with worm and Harders for Steenbras and Kob.

Also are going to try a bit of action for Leeries near the mouth...Think they will be too  small upriver.

Got a whole range of soft minnows and Shad ( Berkley , Tsunami and others ) , and are going to get the boys to work the river with those , ( so mainly will be using light sticks with light tackle ).

The whole idea is to take some guys I do business with , and people who work with me on a boooze , fishing weeekend , introduce them to a new fishing spot and some of the techmiques of fishing ( we take a guide with who is my fishing buddy ) , and have a blast with prizes and competitions on the final day. This is my second year of running it , last year being the two chalets at Die Dam.

At the same time I have a great time .Next year will be Witsands , and some esturine boat fishing.

Its a great idea for corporate bonding sessions. If someone hooked onto the idea , it would do great instead of paintballing etc , because it gets quite competitive , and the campfire bonding sessions are schweeeet. And what goes on tour , stays on tour.

12 kg Leerie at Sandvlei , I see .........hmmmmmmm . Been trying to get that secret spot for ages. You guys are schnoop about handing out those details incase it gets abused. Strictly a sport fisherman........probably taken a few kob and one Belman last year for the pot. The rest released. Those Elf that got damaged by hook and bait nthis weekend , annoyed me. Which was why my target was to try the Berkley lures.

Share the love brother.

Sounds good, wish our work organised things like that! I guess that i get to fish at my leisure out here in Angola so there are some perks!

I wont go so far as to say that the Leerie spots in Sandvlei are a secret, i have not really fished there in the last 2 years, but prior to that i caught all my fish on the first big bend by the bowling green, i know that you can catch leeries anywhere up right into Marina Da gama!

Angola must be awwesome for fishing. Probably the same range of fish as in the Western Cape from the shore????

Thanks for the info....will try. Was that on fly , or bait?
