Howzit all, please add some comments on why? Two lines are out same area with carp heads, no takers. One line out with a Vaaldam Popcorn and Garlic Mielie on the hook same area and the Barbel takes it?

Baffled

::SAll of the above replies are plausible.

Alternatively he could have approached your ''baited-area'' from the mielie-side,and being the opportunistic feeders that they are,he would surely not leave a well-scented or even plain mielie-pip lying around on his way to the carp-heads,or whilst foraging around.

Just a thought.

What is strange is that ,unless it is a big barbel (swimming/hunting alone) why didn't others in the ''pack'' not pick up the carp-heads shortly after. Here's to hoping it was a ''sizer'' ,otherwise we have yet another catfish mystery on our hands.

Interesting.

Not a bump on the other two rods, just this one lonely veggie barbel? The fish was taken at about 300m in deep water.

Don't know the weight but it wasn't really big, youngster holding him is about 6' if you wish to guesstimate its size.

Have never had a bite close to shore in this Dam, Dam! Hence the reason for the deep sea adventure... Its the same with the Carp, nothing decent before 200m and the strangest thing is the dam is not shallow!

All Barbel eat everything that is put in front of them although they do have preference to meat baits.

Don't know how big your fish heads were but a barble that size wouldn't tackle a large head.

Barbel normally wouldn't just take the head what does happen is that they eat the whole feed ball and baits and gets hooked by one or more of the hooks.

With that young barbel you would probably have hooked it with a frog or a bunch of earthworms rarthe than a fish head

So the younger smaller barbel sit out in the deeper waters whilst the big guys hunt around the shallows and edges? The one fish head was around 11CM and the other was about 4CM

in some of these cape town dams, the small barbel cannot leave brown bread dough alone... they literally take it before you get chance to put up a bite indicator!

The popcorn & Mielie... does this make your mielie pip float? or lift it off the bottom. What i've found is that this works even better for the small barbel... those whiskers touch something that isn't flat on the bottom and they just swallow now and chew later!

After the Popcorn expands after absorbing water it should pop up the Mielie, but basically it is a hook bait, being an exploded Mielie lol. It does however contain sweet red flavour which lets off a cloud in the water for a good few minutes.

What I havn't mentioned is the bomb was Mielie with and Explosive mix added which is very rich in amino acids

yip try a fish head at night about 50m out, and one large earthworm "bomb" on a decent size hook about 25m out... You might get a big surprise....

Will give the close quarters barbel a shot see what comes in, the water has of recent risen rather high and there are a number of tress with nesting birds in the water where they never where before, might be a good option.

Cats swallow the mieliebom and gets hooked. I am thinking this a good option as the Bomb was spiked with plenty amino acids and this is one of the key ingredients in commercial catfish feed :)

Try chucking a slow sinking lure at those trees with the nesting birds in, cast on the exact same spot repeatedly for about 10 or so casts, then you'll get a nice surprise.

PS, where is this dam? LOL
