Best fly in Southern Africa

I would have to say that for stream fishing , the RAB is number one and if I was forced to fish a stillwater a damsel is best.

For streams I would say CDC Elk and for stillwater dams olive woolly bugger. For small "stillwater dams" such as Jonkershoek etc..... suspended buzzers works well.

Since I have the stones to cast sutch small buzzers into big pieces of water I have never looked back. To get to the point where you trust them is what its all about.

Streams or stillwater I have mutch more success with suspended nymphs and buzzers than I ever had with big flys. In streams I use a elkhair caddis as an indicator and a Zak nymph suspended.

Thanks to the combination of years of resurtch and the skills of two great fly fishers Uncle Tom and Sean Mills.

The Zak is a mean ass fly guys. Stillwater as mutch as in the streams.

Hey, it helps alot to believe in your choice of fly.

Confidence is key to being successfull. I believe the Zak has got special powers and the king dingeling is magical in every sense. So, I fish them with confidence. Believe it mherberstein and if you do, keep believing it.

Its in the same sence that I believe that floro carbon makes a diffirence. Its because through trial and error I have made up my mind. If your mind is not made up you catch less fish

Please post a pick of the flies you love, my most used flies are dragon fly nymphs, buggers, rabbitstrip zonkers in still water. I think fly choice is determined by the conditions and not just by one fly.

It’s true, but this age old debate keeps asking if you have to choose one fly only what would it be. Of course I can’t use a buzzer to target barbel so the species also influences the choice. I think the favored fly per species would narrow it down a bit.

The best fly per species would also depend on the region.

The insects in KZN for instance are all much uglier than the pretty little goggas that frequent our pristine mountain streams. Giggle giggle.

The Gauteng goggas all have poepol pollution and are mostly ugly too, so it would be very difficult to choose a fly and then try and fish it in those slime trenches, just wouldn’t work.

You guys up there must have your own magic fly for that species you target in a specific piece of water. Like a Plat anna fly that must work in Gauteng.
