WORLD RECORD CARP FROM S.A WATERS.

I got this thing in my head that is bothering me,we have very good specimen anglers in S.A and some guys that is probably just as experienced if not more then some of our oversees anglers and guys that practise specimen carp fishing for more then 30 years here in S.A but why cant we produce a world record.

What can be the cause of this is it our venues, the way things are done here in S.A or what i really do believe that ours venues has the capacity to produce world records but the funny thing is the S.A record is only a upper 60lb and 60lb'rs gets caught often in europe and oversees venues.

What are your guys thoughts on this???????????

cause our waters are managed like our electricity bills and further more carp are looked at as a leker food source for the masses in this country like anything else that swims or crawls

Excactly that....Deisel

The overseas lakes and ponds where alot of these records come from are well managed.

Here in this country when a lake faces a disaster we need to round guys up from a forum to go on weekends and clean up what this USELESS municipalities cant do....

Also you have to take into account that alot of the syndicate lakes overseas are managed/Sponcered by big Names like NASH, Solar ext... these guys also feed these dams with their feeds....

Thus you have Plenty BFC's in smallish lakes and dams that are beeing protected by a decent management... Also you need to keep in mind overseas they dont have the poverty rate we have in SA. If a person catches a fish here in SA and it weighs 10kg he can feed a family of 4 for atleast 2 days... Overseas they dont have that problem...

And thats why we starting to see more of the syndicate type waters in this country where the guys are trying to implament these general rules and safety measures. I still believe we have a far way to go but we do have a few dams with huge potencial and i am sure that we will start seeing over 70lbs in the near future coming from these dams...

The JOYS of living in SA .......

very true deisel! Youv been quiete bud! The problem is our water is very poor and polluted if we could bring our standard of water up and manage it properly we could produce plenty world records even for barbel! But because of our government and all there monkeys our water is there last worry! I watched a thing on 50/50 like three weeks ago about our water and flip was i shocked! Some dams and rivers dont even have litches in them and when you have litches your water is bad but when there are no litches or any life you got trouble as thats how bad the water is that not even they wana live in it!

My other idea is for private venues to install a filter system for there dams you get natrual filters wich uses flowing water over rocks and plant to filter it but it costs money to construct filters like that the upside to it though is once its running you dont have to maintane it it does its own thing and the other thing is the money for the pumps!

but yet our syndicate waters are fed by government dams and rivers that are polluted so it doesnt really help! It goes the same for my aquruims if your water is not in tip top shape your fish will never reach there full growing potential thus i have to change 20% water a week and get the water to where they want it!

like we all said, the fish dont have a chance to get that old, they have however found dead carp that would be close to 80 85 lbs in dams like the vaal and hartees

Dams like Ebenezer and Tzaneen hold the potential to deliver records, but they are difficuilt venues with not much luxury for the most South african anglers, who wont spend more than 4 days next to dam with no toiletss, showers etc.

If you remember the last trip me and you had to Tzaneen, I told you about the spear fishing problem at Tzaneen that they had, were guys shot 18kg + carp and 4,5kg+ Bass, by diving to the bottom and shooting them from underneath. Well some good news, after I reported it to Nature conservation they took action, Torry let me know that they arrested 2 guys caught spear fishing there, and confiscated all their gear.

I still believe the record will come from one of these 2 dams. You just need to target it constantly.

Here is my theory, we definitely have a world record fish in our waters, but how prolific they are and where they are who knows. You can imagine in a dam like the Gariep how difficult must it be to catch the biggest size fish of any species. I think all the reasons mentioned in the forum are valid and effect all fish in our waters. But I think you can't really compare our waters with European waters, our carp population are very prolific if you compare it to most waters in Europe. Some areas are quite cold in Europe and only big fish survive, so obviously its easier to catch bigger fish, because there aren't smaller fish that can get to the bait first. Some of there dams are also very small so the chance increases significantly to catch a bigger fish.

I also think a lot of our dams are over populated with smaller fish and that results in bigger fish struggling to grow beyond a certain point.  If you managed a decent size dam in South Africa, stocked it with 20kg plus carp and controlled the population, fishing etc I am sure you will get some monsters! My ten cents

lets make it simple to have world record sized fish you need the following:

1) Correct carp strain (dutch carp wont grow big, dor 70 will grow massive)
2) Perfect water quality and oxygen levels
3) Correct bio mass (amount of ALL fish species in the lake)
4) good stock of natural food
5) culling of fish after EVERY spawning season
6) Additional feed for fish based on bio mass of the dam (5% of bodyweight to be fed every 2 days)
7) predator fish to control small fish and fry
8) depth of dam shoul dbe max 5m to allow warm water all year round
9) constant inflow and out flow of water via monks (inflow of oxygenated water outflow of depleted oxygen water)
10)closed season
11) natrual reed and stone filters at the start of the inflow to the dam
12) sediment traps at the inflow of the dam (has to be cleaned every 3-5years)
13)no more than 2 anglers per acre
14) only boilies an pellets as bait (particles dont do much)
15) proper carp safety rules

once you have that in SA 100lbers will become reality!

We definitely have some of the best carp anglers in the world so that story that there is monster carp swimming around but we just dont catch them is rubbish in my opinion. SA wont deliver A world record anytime soon, maybe our children will have that honor IF and that is A very big IF regulations can be put in place as renrew has mentioned above. It looks like there are some venues moving in that direction though so some of us might see A record in our life times (just dont know if we will still be able to fishby then!) That being said, if A venue like that can be established and I hope it will be soon, I think the SA record at least will be broken soon enough for me to have A chance! lol! But do we have potential for A world record yes absolutely.
