Non-skid

The previous owner or the one before was into some bling bling and painted all the non-skid on the gunnel and nose with a metallic blue. Obviously no non-slip effect anymore. I did a bit of home work and came to try out International's Interdeck product. It just paints on. It is awsome stuff, I can really recommend it.  It is fine enough not to remove skin but stick like crazy wet and dry with barefeet or shoes on.

BoatUS did a test on a whole lot of no-skid surfaces, and although this did not come out tops (3rd I think), it sure as hell is the cheapest and easiest to apply. And it works.

Thought I'd share this for those okes out there looking to do a bit of chip and paint on their boats. Especially the Robbie guys who are currently refurbishing.  This stuff is better than any moulded in non-slip I've had the displeasure of operating on.

HT, I know the teak would have looked really awsome, but it sucks as a non-skid surface.

Hi FZ, thanks for the heads up and advice. International is normally good paint and glad to see the nonslip is quality. What kind of prep do you have to do, sand and smooth or back to raw material then prime etc?

According to instructions you can just sand down and paint. Obviously cutting through any loose paint, but as soon as you hit a good base you can paint, no primer required. That is according to instruction. I ahve done this and will see how it holds up.

I did a couple of tests for applying, I did a straight forward brush on, a stipple brush application and a roller. The roller is by far the easiest and gives the best result. I thinned (with turpentine) it out to 10% as they recommend and applied the first layer when it was cooler in the evening, it gave a real well spread and even finish. I put the next coat down with 5% thinners and did it while it was hot outside. This was a mistake, it definitley came out more blotchy. Very slightly so though. I think it goes dry too quickly and stays thick. So the following parts I will be doing will all be with 10% thin and in the evening when it is cool.

I bought it at Seaport in Paarden Eiland. I suppose you could buy it at any shop that sells International. I do believe that Seaport are the agents though. www.seaport.co.za

Not sure why you would want to have non skid gunnel tops my self but whatever blows your hair back. Not sure I would want to be supporting myself up from the downward pull of a big tuna on sandpaper for two hours, so think about that. I know some boats have it on the gunnels but I have not seen it in too many of the bigger boats and new designs.
On the deck - for sure and thanks cos  when I rip up those nasty bloody carpets I will try this product out.

I hate my carpets, the blood stays and even with the jabsco it is a mission to get rid of. Bleeding big tuna is a messy business and carpets are my main curse out there. I often have to re-wash the deck a day after a heavy trip.

HT, we use the boat at Langebaan and get in and out along side in shallow water. Already had Theo nearly crack a rib getting on to the boat. We also get on and off at a Jetty at Breede and the easiest is to get on the cabin. It was helluva slippery, so had to do something about this.

By the way, Clinton gave me a good deal on the Jabsco deck-wash, thanks dude.
