14,6 Skicraft transom

Hi Bingo and other experts

I have a friend that has a 14,6 Skicraft hull. He has re-done it so that it is a very simple fishing boat, open layout, cofin hatch down the middle and tiller steering.

He has a 50hp short shaft yamaha that he would like to fit to the boat.

My questions are these:

A) Is it advisable to cut the transom down to make the motor fit?

B) Will a 50hp be enough HP for this hull.

thanks in advance.

50hp should be plenty you can cut down the transom as long as you can still bolt the motor on properly and it will be above the water line once cut

Don't cut the transom to fit a single short shaft motor, you will end up with problems.
Transom height for short shaft is around 420mm and long 520mm.
Rather sell the short shaft 50hp motor and buy a long.

Hallo catmallat

Firstly, I am no expert, but what Seeker1 suggests is not a bad idea. 50hp should be more than enough power on that boat. My previous Ski-craft planed on 1x 25hp, two guys up. Rather sell the 50 and get one 40hp long shaft...

Cheers thanks for all the replies.

Thats the plan then, will sell the short shaft.

Anyone know of a good 2nd hand longshaft 40-50hp tiller motor please let me know.

cheers thanks

I used to have a 14"6' just like that. Running two 30hp trip, short shafts. I lowered the transom 60 mm to have enough water on the props. Performance-wise I had no problems, never cavitated and never had problems with water overflow into the false transom after a sudden shut down of power.

I did have a gripe, though. With the motor sitting so low on the transom, you couldn't tilt the motors out far enough to get them out the water when mooring. So I ended up with wooden blocks to keep the props out the water while the boat is lying on the mooring at my holiday house.

The differnce here is that you're concidering a single installation which means you'll have to take more than 60mm off the transom - that may pose some problems.

That's the long answer - short answer. Get yourself a nice, looked after 40/50 long.

Phone a gentleman called Leon at Boating Dynamics. He has a number for Leon (ex owner of Leon's Outboards). He now works from Langebaan. He might have a good second hand outboard for you. 021 535 3735

You can try Leon Brand on 0722296796.at least that was his last no I had.

And yup I also agree not to cut down the transom …… a deep short swell and you’ll find out why.
