I assume you're referring to Couta / King Mackerel - those are good indeed.

Most people say the "Greater Barracuda" is not good eating - never tried it, 'cos I've always been put off by the smell and slime so we always release these (and they stink up the hatch too if you don't release them - their natural defense mechanism!!!)

Has anyone ever tried smoked blue marlin - awesome!  This is the most sort after delicacy in Mauritius, even more so than lobster, crab and prawns.

Gilly

Good to see you narrowed it down to 11 there Wayne LOL. I know how you feel. From the sea,its easier to write a list of the worst (even if theyre fresh) . Its shorter. Skate wings Naaah..Leery Naah and lets just say theres some things you should clearly never even try like braaid hagfish....MMM

My tops R-- Seared Yellowfin Steaks--Yellowtail Sashimi--and Geelbek pretty much any way it comes. Super-fresh elf is also right up there

Anybody ever tried sea barbel? It's quite similar to kingklip, excellent fish. Then rockod, galjoen and musselcracker for curry, couta for biryani. And crisply fried sardines.

1. White steenbras / Grunter can't be beaten in my books.
2. Kob
3. Shad
4. Yellowtail

All of the above must be 'just caught' fresh, or its not worth eating. White steenie's and its cousin the grunter are AMAZING eating!

A fresh fat winter snoek on the braai is also hard to beat. A bit difficult to find fresh snoek these days though, becoming a bit of a endangered species!!
