my medium setup for barbel is:

Shimano Nexave 7'0 MH Casting
Tica Caiman 100
15lb Berkley Big Game

Heavy:
Shimano Clarus 7'6" Heavy Casting (This rod has some serious backbone)
Tica Caiman 150
20lb Berkley Big Game

whats your budget like?

Well, in quick:

Shimano Clarus 7'6" H - R600
Daiwa Light & Tuff +- R700
Tica Caiman 150 12bb - R650

The shimano Calcutta is an excellent reel but pricey,
I am extremely happy with my Tica Caimans, if you go braid go 50lb, if mono go Berkley Big Game 20lb (its about .45mm in diameter)

Oh ja, the Shimano Clarus is best suited for heavy sinking lures eg punkinseed, salmo slider and i use it for big poppers aswell

I wouldnt use it for cranking.

Its one of those lures which you guard with your life, which you only find in those dodgy little tackle stores that still carries old stock.

They dont make them no more...
