Bike: Santacruz Blur XC carbon

Why: I wanted a bike that would be light enough to race, yet strong enough to handle my aggressive riding style, and still be comfortable enough to spend a whole day playing in the mountains.

Used to ride a Schwinn Moab 1. Sold it last year and didn't ride for a while. Am looking to buy a new bike soon. What do you think of this one?

Very nice indeed! Silverback make great bikes - I have always liked the geometry of their frames.

Have you had a look at any of the 29er bikes?

Have seen them, but don't know if I like them. Will go for a test drive as soon as I get a chance.

I have personally never really been a great fan of Cannondale. I find their bikes just too twitchy for my riding style.

One thing you can be sure of is if go Cannondale you will end up with a very light bike.

The best bike I ever had was a Diamondback Apex. It was cro-moly with full SL groupset. But the best riding bike ever.

I remember them, those bikes were as tough as nails...

Best hard-tail I owned was the GT Zaskar. Although the frames were not very strong (I snapped 4 in a year) the geometry made for an awesome ride.

Best soft-tail I must say is my current ride, the Santacruz. The other soft-tails I've had all had some type of compromise, but this one does everything amazingly well - thus far  I have been unable to find any fault. The only thing lacking in the package is my fitness :fbash

2005 Kona Caldera, without knobblies as i only use it in the urban jungle at the moment  but i am looking for a reasonably priced fork with lock-out to stop all that the wasted energy through the fork issue , any suggestions ?

wish i was fit enough not to have to worry about the bike rocking when i get out the saddle.

Gatsaag is nie vir my nie, maar ek kry nogals baie pret uit hierdie outjie uit. Yamaha WR450F.

These days most fork manufactures have a few models with lockout but this feature is usually reserved for the higher end models.

You have a couple of other cheaper options besides replacing the fork with another one.

Replace it with a rigid fork - will be much cheaper and lighter than a suspension fork.

Tweak your current fork to be stiffer. This will depend on what type of fork you have.

If it is air/oil you can increase the air pressure as well as replace the oil with a thicker type. With coil spring or elastomer you should be able to get a kit that will stiffen up the fork. Allthough not a total lockout this would go quite a way to alleviating suspension bob - just make sure you check the manufactures specifications to see how far you can push this.

You have no idea... the missus got worried when I mentioned I wanted to pawn the cat.

One thing I can say is I saved a huge amount by buying most of the components from online overseas shops - besides being much cheaper than in SA we don't pay any import duty (only tax) on components. I saved about a quarter compared to what I would have spent locally.
