Where can I fish in the Durbaville area for barbel and carp?

I know about the bottom Sonstraal dam, does anyone know about the top dam? are there any big fish in there? and what bait do you recommend?

Thanks.

theres some fish around at your favorite spots , now its winter and the Barbel slows down , in spring you will be able to target them with good luck !

top dam magoc forest has got BIG barbel , be prepared , otherwise you wil not land them !

In Boland street just past the Church on the right hand side there is a small dam. Biggest barbel +/- 10kg and if I am not mistaken Killer Strepie caught a carp of 11kg. Couple of small bass in the dam aswell.

Not sure if you are allowed to fish in the top dam anymore, but we always fished there with good success. There are nice big carp, up to 12kg we caught and if you sit on the little cement overflow and cast in the direction of that tower thing sticking out you will get good results with barbel. Use snails or bluegill for the barbel.

My laaitie took this one in a pond in Brackenfell, legend has it there is an 11kg & 18kg Barbel in there as well. We haven't fished there much & have not tried for Barbel. Next time I go I will pack some meaty goodies in my bag & see what happens. BTW the one in the picture only weighed 1,5kgs.

The pond , that LOOMIS are talkingabout , is in Vierlanden , the dam , has got his ups and downs , however they pulled the plug on fishing there , they emtied the dam out a couple of years ago ,. so theres fish , but not good fish !

Everybody reckons you cant fish , Sonstraal top or bottom , but i havent had any problems , theres a nosy lady [wendy, self employed mayor of the dam , and also provides endless humour when she goois a tantrem she claims all sorts of funny things , i reckon the TIK has got her LOL] she rocks up there and causes a scence quite alot ! She phoned the
Fuzz a couple of times , what happens they rock up there and ask us was are we doing , and then they leave agian , theres a rumour that has been doing the rounds for a while that one gets fined , i havent seen any fine or anybody that has been fined !!

If you guys are looking for BIG BARBEL theres only one place to go , MAGICFORREST top dam , I have seen andhelped to land fish of over 20kgs !!! clever tactics are essencial , cos the beasts just runs you into the oppisite bank thats covered in Stucture , they do slow down alot in winter and if you want to target them now you must be able to sit and fish for atleast 10 hours !

Like Koko said Belwater park has got very good oppertuinities for big CARP , cold condisions produce the fish of over 10kgs , can be very hard to fish tough , When it come to Sontraal , just take a walk around the ponds , theres plenty of spots , white bread , works well with floats or weightless !

Then theres Hillcrest , deep Quarry , pay to fish for the day , big Carp , Barble , use to get BIG blues , bass ans Trout there but i havent been down there in ages so can really comment on current catches or situations !
Most of the local farmers allows you to fish , if you ask them before hand , and we have some private waters with really good fishing!

ok toe you got me interested.... I used to papgooi quite a bit when i stayed inland.

I'll definately give the barbel a go in magic forest... i have some beefed up strategies we used to pull in the Vaal if they misbehaved(ethics to be discussed at a later stage).

My son is 4 and a bit now and i would love a safe stretch of water as shown in the picture above. If he is with, size doesnt matter too much, as long as the bites are quick to keep him interested. Also don't want to worry he'll get violently ill if he tries to touch the water, or with no deep/high banks (the only reason i havent taken him to sonstraal or magic forest, coz he doesnt sit still)
