Paste bait

Has anyone tried making a paste bait for barbel as they do in the UK?I want to try it so was wondering if anyone had any experience on it.My idea is to make two types of paste baits(minced pigeon, chicken blood and fishmeal) and (minced chicken liver and day old chicks, chicken blood and fishmeal).i want to hook these on a hair to get the barbel to eat it a lot quicker and easier. My idea behind this is maybe monster barbel are as clever as big carp and spit the bait or leave it if they feel a hook or detect danger.

Any thoughts on this?

I know a guy who puts dog-pellets and marmite in a food-processor, mixing it with brownbread. Good results with carps and cats.

You can also use a tin of catfood, the pilchard flavour, think Topcat is the cheapest one and mix it with brownbread into a paste.

The important thing is that your pase must not come of the hook. ;)

Take a big floatie and wrap it with the paste. Or use a hair rig with a pop-up boilie and cover the pop-up with the paste. A Brakkanjan says, it should not come off too easily.

My plan exactly, use the pop up with the paste wrapped around to fish just of the bottom or the paste rolled in a ball if I want to fish on the bottom.I was also thinking of using a soft gauze material wrapped around the paste which will be dipped in blood. This will have a great smell and the bait will stay in tact.

I want to use the specific combinations cause I have caught all my barbel on these baits,so my feeling is to combine all these falvours and smells will be a great attractant.

Sharky, I read in an old Oewerhengelaar that Henkor sells blood boilies, made for cats.

They also make feeding balls with lots of blood, oils, pellets and other meaty kinds of ingredients.

They produce a blood dip that I use with alot of confidence : Preserved Chicken Blood. Maybe give those blood boilies a go ?

@Brakanjan,Yes henkor sells some awesome products for cats but I have litres of blood so won't be spending my money on a bottle of preserved blood.I'm sure they're boilies will work aswell, but any fishmeal boilie will do the trick aswell.I really want to make my own bait, have some fun experimenting and who knows I might come up with a killer bait. All the baits out there work, but I want to make one that works 10 times better. If all else fails I'll just use a fishead...

Sounds like a plan Sharky...
Please keep us updated.
If you don't mind me asking, what is it that you do that allows you access to "litres of blood"?

@burgalmighty,I know someone that works on a chicken farm that supplies me with blood as I need it.Trust me they have more than they can use.

Cool man...
It must be great having a steady supply.
I wish I knew someone in that line of work. I'm struggling finding a place close by that can supply me with assorted chicken parts.
Good luck with the paste bait.
Write up a how-to report if you come right.
Tight lines buddy.

Sharky will you be able to make a feeding-spot with all the blood and guts and other meaty stuff? Then maybe put your bait in the feeding-Zone?

Think that will be a good for bites the whole day.

Hi

I dont know if a hair rig will work so well as a barbels mouth is a bit harder than a carps and they got pads of teeth. Maybe just try freelining with a large hook 6/0 or bigger and a big ball of paste. Hide the hook because barbell tend to take off as soon as they eat the bait an by the time he crushes the paste the hook will set itself due to the power and speed of the 1st run. Just make sure your rod is secure or you might loose it. hope this helps

@Brakkanjan,yes i will be making a feeding spot consisting of minced dove, chicken liver, fish, veal heart, fishmeal and chicken blood.

The baits have been made and some pre-rigged and frozen.Of to Bloemhof tomorrow so will hopefully have some nice pics and feedback next week.

Calvin I have pre-rigged baits with the hair rig and straight onto the hook,so I hope I'll be able to give some feedback after the wknd on what worked the best.
