Howzit everyone,  I was just wondering, braking blocks, what do they look like on a saltist 50.  i got mine did not do anything with it, but i have read posts of adding removing blocks.  anybody know how the standard setup is whent he reel is shipped?  i noticed there are two small plastic pins, in the box , not sure what these are or where these go, i just use the reel as is, it works fine for me, but off course if i could get it working better then i would :)

Toots, this is what they look like... see pic enclosed.

There are BIG red ones, and smaller black ones. You need to take the side plate off the Saltist. Slip the Red or black ones on. Thats it.

The bigger red ones provide more braking. Some guys, like Rodbuilder, (who apparently casts a mile...) swear by the technology of using them to control the reel.
By default, all Daiwa reels are shipped without the brakes fitted. You need to put them on yourself if you want to use them. Really simple to do though and gives, in my opinion, just that little bit more control than without.

Reef,
Strange thing is my SL50 didn't come with the brakes fitted, but both my Saltist's did (red ones).
Normally you would have to fit them.
They definately work though, no doubt. I wouldn't like to try casting without them esp. with my Saltists.

I wonder how the Torium casts, seeing as it doesn't have a braking system?

They are centrifugal brakes Philip... work on centrifugal/rotational force. The weight forced outwards will slow the spool down relative to the amount of rotational force placed on the spool, by contact with the brake drum - causes friction and slows the spool.

shot, thanks man.

i always thought that you have to set the tension on the brake blocks so that when the spool spins ( rotates ) it runs against the blocks and causes it to slow down and ultimately give a better and controled cast

different to the trinidad
Tn30 has 4 shoes and the drum looks like its pressed into the casing.
Do you oil the surface?
