Barbel fillet for cob - mith or fact

I have caught a couple of kob on baber fillet in the mosselbay area and have seen a boerie caught in the breede with a stomache full of babers. So I know baber fillets definately work.

The very large cob which you normally found in estuaries, river mouths such as the Breede Rivier down here in the WCape. 40kg +

Hi Guys

When using the baber fillet, do you leave the skin on or take it off? I have heard that it is actually the skin that stop the other babers from eating it.

Cheers, Kleintjie

Hi chaps.

Quick question:  When you used the barbel as bait, did you use it with the skin or without? Tell you why.

I was tossing lead behind Bailley's cottage one morning.  Landed a few(quite a few) barbel and decided to test the myth of using barbel.  I filletted one and let fly.  After about 20 mins, sweet jack sh#t.  An old  timer came up to me as asked what bait i was using.  He then asked me the same question, skin or no skin?  Next throw i removed the skin and lo and behold i landed both kob and elf.  According to Van (the old timer)  the skin makes the bait very slimy and unappetising.

I've used them with great success in the Transkei (Beachamwoods) . Best skinned , but have also caught them with the skin still on . I must admit though I've only used them after trying other baits with no success .

A little off topic here but have you guys tried shark for bait for kob, one night down at Strandfontein we got into a nice shoal of kob and eventually ran out of bait, the other guys continued to catch on white stump fillet but i filleted a small Vaalhaai that was caught early in the night and that worked like a bomb! I would howver say that you would most prob have to bleed the shark while it is still alive, and skin it!

I have used skinned barbel fillets in Witsand and Henties, caught Some cobs and spotty in Henties, and a cob and "moer baie" barbel in Witsand. Barbel is less interested in barbel as in sards, but they eat it. They'll eat sh*t if its on a hook.

interesting stuff this,,,have anyone else tried barbel fillets in butter? old(er) guy told me they lekker, so the next decent size one went home,,, as a 'taste test" it is LOVELY,,the wife said best i'd caught! dunno about them as bait,,,
however, maasbanker works for me, specially as a livebait, but fillets also,(fresh) they freeze well, a good bait for sharks,as they last longer as a cut bait, had elf, cob, sharks on them, same applies with streepies, but they are a softer bait if frozen.
i've only fished the sea for 3 years or so, my limited knowledge!,,,,,,,,,,

I,ll be trying that when I get back two...have to put this to the test.... Oh and just one thing...watch that sting or you will be pis**ing on your hand all day or night long ...only thing that takes it away... I know for a fact it works as it has happened to me plenty times....LOL.

The smaller sandshark, i call them banjo's, are excellent bait for cob. They have 2 fillets running down the back that if you take them out look like round tubes. Excellent bait.

Sea barbel is a really good bait for kabeljou. Fillets work but a small livey is even better especially for larger kob.
In my opinion this is the best bait for kob - definitely my go-to bait
