I have been using steel assist rigs for a while now, but the recent addition of some bling definitley entices more strikes. Recipie: 12/0 Mustad Hoodlum 175lb multi-strand cable 3 x double barrel crimps crystal flashabou heat-shrink tube fly tying bobbin clear nylon thread You will need a vice of sorts; i use my Dyna-King fly tying vise. Wrap a base thread the tie in two clumps of crystal flashabou ensuring that the flash is spread evenly around the hook shank. ![]() ![]() ![]() Cut a short piece of heat shrink and pull the flash through the shrink with the aid of a piece of nylon. ![]() Shrink the tube around the base; ensure that you wrap some paper around the flash up against the shrink so that you dont burn the flash. ![]() Slide a crimp onto your 175lb cable ensert the cable through the eye of the hook, wrap 2 times tightly around the shank and exit oposite to the entry. ![]() ![]() Hold the wrap tight so that it does not slip. Crimp the sleeve tight against the shank. ![]() I add 2 pieces of small shrink over the crimp to build up the diameter so that the larger shrink will fit tight when it is shrunk. ![]() Add a second crimp fitting over both tag ends, dont crimp yet. ![]() Add a third crimp only on one tag, then add the solid ring to that same tag and make a loop through the ring wrapping the tag over the loop twice to form a lock. ![]() Snug the loop and put the tag through the crimp; pull the crimp tight against the loop and ensure that the tag is lining up with the tag coming out of the middle crimp (you may have to undo the loop until you get it to line up). ![]() Cut the tag coming out of the ring crimp and leave a section of about 7mm, then check the tag coming out of the middle crimp and cut it so that there is about a 1mm gap between the tags. ![]() Slide the middle crimp over and crimp tight; ensure that the steel is straight when you crimp as it has a tendency to pull when you crimp and it will end up twisting. ![]() ![]() Ensure that the hook faces away from the jig when you rig up or it will wrap on the jig. ![]() A couple of variations ![]() When your jigs look like this a steel assist may just be the difference between catching that monster fish that comes along rather than loosing it because some other toothy critters have chewed through your kevlar. ![]() Last edited on Wed Oct 5th, 2011 08:07 am by blaasoppie#1 |

Yep, dressed assists seem to work with bottom feeders (I also like som glow in the assist). Those 3 Williamson Benthos are my favourite colours on the Benthos. Do you like those abyss jigs ? (I don't like their action, but probably it's me..)

Howzit Fedu, Those abyss 400g are heavy and not much action so you really have to work them hard to get strikes. I prefer the 200g Abyss for my lighter set up as they plumet in 100m of water and are not too heavy to work. When the drift is fast i still put the 400g Abyss down as it is the quickest jig to reach the bottom.

Had to make a reply on this, the assist rigs with the flashabou is a very potent addition. It really is a beautiful set-up. It is a small upgrade, but I feel that it also brings a lot more attention to the jig. That one Hooker looks familiar..... Any chance any of those assist rigs are mine?

Hi Mark - love your reports and photography. Any chance of re-posting these photos. I am on my way to Farquhar Atoll in the Seychelles and need to make up some steel assist rigs. Last time I was there I lost quite a few fish to the Kevlar being shredded so resorted to using a chain of two Owner split rings. I see you do some fishing with Atlantic Evasion who I think also do trips to the Bijagos Islands have you investigated fishing the Islands before I would love to get up there targeting JC and the Garrick they get up there. Maybe the moderators can make this topic a sticky!! Cheers Craig Last edited on Mon Oct 10th, 2011 03:40 pm by Ulua |

Craig, No problem mate; i moved the photos, as my photobucket account was a mess. Eric is a great guy and i am without doubt going to go to Bijagos before i am finished up here. The jigging is also mindblowing there aparently; i read this french article in Voyages De Peche and these guys were constantly being smashed on the jigs. Most of the water is very shallow over there though and you have to go a considerable way out to get beyond 60m. Last edited on Wed Oct 5th, 2011 08:12 am by blaasoppie#1 |

Thanks Mark sorry for the hassle. I was doing some research on the flights to the Bijagos in Guinea-Bissau with a local travel agent and they worked out that from South Africa you have to go via Dakar, do you know is this is correct? Last edited on Mon Oct 10th, 2011 03:41 pm by Ulua |

Craig, That is correct, you have to fly via Dakar. Fishing is super hot here at the moment; Eric caught a 30 kg AJ on Friday and my mate got one of a similar size yesterday. I was so freaking unlucky not to hook a big one yesterday as both my mate and Eric hooked up and i did not get a hit when the big fish came through. Bijagos is only a one hour flight from Dakar, then a 3 hour boat ride to the lodge. 400 km from Dakar to Akunda lodge. Last edited on Mon Oct 10th, 2011 03:11 pm by blaasoppie#1 |

30kg AJ must pull like hell! When you do get a monster please put in a few punches for me as I got cleaned up in Kenya by one of those gansters and need to settle the score. When you planning on heading to Bijagos?

Man those big fish pull; last weekend i took this guy that has never jigged before and he got cleaned up big time. Yesterday i caught about a 12kg AJ that almost took me back into the wreck from about 20m off the bottom; i thought it was a monster, had to seriously palm the spool but turned out to be a middleweight with a big attitude. Not sure when i will be able to go to Bijagos; my work plans may be a a problem for me. Was planning on going in November next year.

Great post. Thanks for the info. I will definitely make up a few of these to put out when the toothys are around. Just 2 comments. I was testing out an assist knot recently that I had tied using a 10/0 hoodlum. I hooked the hoodlum over my burglar bars and pulled on the assist using some braided rope. I was truly shocked at how easily the hook opened. I tried again with another hoodlum and had the same result. I then switched over to a JM hook and there was almost no movement in the gape with similar tension. It could be that I have a crap batch of Hoodlums, but for safety sake, I know what I'll be using when I make up a few of these assists. Also, I've been wondering about the use of heat shrink over metal. It's a perfect environment for corrosion to develop, despite your best rinsing efforts. I first noticed it when I used heat shrink for my baker rigs. I have since cut off all the heat shrink that I had on my tackle. Even still, when I return from a trip, I undo all my kevlar assists, rinse them, dry them then retie. My R0.02
