I've never fished braid in my life - always used 12lb mono & a 35lb Kingfisher leader - Ok that was for Specimen Carp angling at range ... normally just 12lb mono straight thro' -
I tried it for barbel & it works so far but I'll give 15lb Berkley a go & get some braid later .......

Hey Ryan
i only started fishing in november and only target barbel at the vaal river.I cannot find the ugly stick anywhere in joburg except for sollys in booysens @R655 for the "lite" stick 40 lbs.
Do you know where i can find one even if it is in pretoria?
What reel should i pair this with?my friends have landed a couple of 17's and 18's kg so i would like to join them.

Thanks Anthony

I forgot to add,i currently have a shimano alivio 4000 rb reel.my budget for the reel would be about R700.The owner of my local fishing shop tried to sell me a D.A.M reel from germany that they apparently use for pike it can take up to 80lb line and it was R1200 almost double my original budget. However if the premium is worth it i will gladly buy it as we are planning a trip to the orange/bloem for nov,is it maybe overkill though?
Any one tried the Penn powerstik 2, rated 10-12 kg..this is my alternate option to ugly stik. Thanks guys in advance

A 9ft XH ugly stick shouldnt be more than R470, try Fishing Pro shop in Lynwood Ave Pta, The next step up from the alivio is the Slade 4000, Paid R340 for one last week. Got plenty faith in those boytjies.

I put 15lb berkley big game on my slade 4000 and got about 100m or so on. Berley big game is quite thick. The 12lb will give you about 130m i guess.

I use maxima ultragreen leaders, that stuff is bulletproof.

As far as the Ugly Stik being the recommended rod is concerned, does the recommendation go for bait fishing as well, or primarily artlure?

I've got the Shimano slade 4000 with 12lb Berkely Big Game, no leader & attached to a light rod ... noooo stress there & I've landed some nice cats on that set-up. Gives a nice play !!

The 2 Ugly sticks are used for casting and heavier baits / sinkers and cast to snags or opne water etc ... these can handle barbel all day long...I have big daiwa reels on these with 12lb big game and 35lb Kingfisher mono for a leader - !!
